Name: Britney Jean Spears
Age: 22
Nationality: American
Claim to fame: The princess of pop

BRITNEY Spears, the princess of pop is now the youngest-ever music icon to have a star on Hollywood’s prestigious Walk of Fame. Seen at the ceremony in jeans, a pink shirt and a furry pink jacket, just a day after her corset-clad appearance on the American Music Awards and a day before the release of her latest album, In the Zone. Spears beat former Little House on the Prairie actress Melissa Gilbert for being the youngest person to accept a Walk of Fame star. While fans screamed their support, the superstar presided over the unveiling of her own bronze-edged star that lies among those of movie and music legends along the pavement of Los Angeles’ Hollywood Boulevard.

With her fourth album now out, Spears, who was once a teen sex symbol, is aiming to capture a more mature (and male) fan base and a more musically diverse audience. In the past couple of years, her squeaky-clean teen icon image has been replaced by that of a raunchier adult performer. Thus, In the Zone with breathy vocals in a number of songs clearly seems to be presenting an edgier image. Of late, particularly since the debut of her music video I’m a Slave 4 U, Spears has take an increasingly provocative journey into sexual exhibitionism.

From her love life to her infamous MTV Video Music Awards kiss with Madonna, to her increasingly sexy dressing, the artist is trying to move away from the candy-coated image of the past. After all, a teen pop queen’s reign is never long and Britney wants to stay around at the top for a long time, like Madonna, with whom she says there is a special connection: “She’s like my godmother in a way.”

Since her debut CD, Baby One More Time, that broke sales records when it was released in 1999, she has sold more than 54 million albums worldwide. She was the first female performer to have her first three albums debut at number one. Her albums have won numerous accolades, including two Grammy and eight MTV Video Music Award nominations, seven American Billboard Awards and a World Music Award for best international female artist.

A Louisiana native, the pop diva started her career performing in off-Broadway productions. At the age of 11, she began her stint on the television show The Mickey Mouse Club, where she met future boyfriend and pop star Justin Timberlake.

Her best known songs include Oops! ... I Did it Again and I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet a Woman. Though critics are apprehensive about Britney Spears’ fourth album, hundreds of excited fans were inspired to camp out in Times Square on the day of its release to get the pop star to sign a copy of the CD.
