Stop procrastinating
THIS is with reference to the article Stop procrastinating (August 10).
The writer has rightly complained of the indifferent and non-indulgent behaviour on the behalf of the present-day civilized man. It is quite true that we lack the spirit of reform and action. Out surroundings affect us the least.
But it should also be remembered that the modern scientific and industrial era has set challenges for man to survive purposefully on earth. Average and low-grade studies do no good to the proud educationists. Only the competitive and highly-qualified people get chance to prove true worth in their respective fields.
Having been caught in the spell of competition, young people mostly tend to adopt lethargic and non-caring behaviour towards others. Realization of one’s duties and obligations is only possible if society provides the platform for the proper grooming of natural instincts and aptitudes. Great values of patience, tolerance and perseverance should be given importance in our daily life. A generally cool and comforting behaviour of the ruling junta would probably encourage individuals to search out ways and means of creating resources.
Then instead of running “far away from the madding crowd”, everyone would think it better to become an active participant of the general run of the society.

The dark side of technology
THIS is with reference to the article, The Dark Side of Technology (August, 24).
As always there are pros and cons to having filters installed at ISP level. These filters offer resistance but are not fool proof and the targeted audience is so well informed that they know how to get around these filtering software. We see a living proof of it everyday here in Saudi Arabia.
I am a strong proponent of the fact that parents should take responsibility of their children. It’s about time that they learn that simply giving birth is not what makes a parent, there is much more to it.
There will be no end to state-run filters. Why stop at Internet pornography? What about movies, dish programmes, advertisements and magazines? Anything short of living in a dictatorial regime will not accomplish the goal of controlling access to the obscene material. Educate and empower kids. We can’t hide and shield them from everything ill prevalent in the society these days.
Also, has anyone ever studied the impact that Indian movies are having on our young generation? A pornographic site is open and clear about its message, so we can address this menace directly. Indian movies and other material like it is more dangerous by being deceitful and fostering wrong ideas in the green minds.
Here are a few suggestions that I think will help to address this problem:
1. Self regulation by an association of Internet cafe owners etc. to have a code of practice.
2. Introduction of sex education from eight grade onwards. The most ridiculous of excuses that we hear against it is that of religion. Who are we trying to kid? The earlier we get to grips with reality, the better it will be. This way at least the kids will be able to get the accurate and reliable info and help prevent many problems later on.
3. Availability of attractive options instead of Internet for kids.
4. Parents should limit the screen time of kids to a maximum of two hours per day.
5. Parents should spend at least half an hour per day with their kids as quality time with no other activity to attend to.
6. And above all, parents should take responsibility.

The worst airline
WITH reference to the letter on August 17, I want to highlight PIA’s poor HR department. A few weeks back, there was an advertisement in the national dailies for the selection of Trainee Officers in PIA. As per the given procedure, I posted an application with self-addressed envelope, to the national airline’s HR department, requesting a registration form. More than a month has passed and the last date for the submission of the form has expired, but I have yet to receive the form, or any other information regarding my request.
