States of consciousness

By Muhammad Munir

The fact that the unified, physical laws of the Earth dominate the fixed laws of the whole cosmos establishes the idea that the Earth is the brain or index of the whole universe

CREATIVE processes have shown that each higher rational stage that succeeds on the sealing of the preceding rational stage sheds its crude and rough mass, descending in a highly sensitive and complicated form of matter. Compared to the rough and unorganized matter of the cosmos, the matter of the Earth is highly sophisticated and organized.

The fact that the unified, physical laws of the Earth dominate the fixed laws of the whole cosmos rationally, without overthrowing them, establishes the fact that the Earth exists, acting as something like the brain or index of the whole universe.

Vegetable life is the most organized. Without overthrowing Earth’s fixed physical behaviour, it extracts juices from minerals and chemicals, fixing colour from sunlight. Simultaneously, on the sealing of the vegetable life stage, animal life sheds its mass and appears in a highly sensitive form of matter. Just as in the cosmos, the physical laws of Earth rationally dominate the universe, similarly with its insignificant brain, animal sense perceptions prevail over the universe. The animal brain not only outlives the physical laws of the Earth, but the brain exists as a highly sensitive antenna through which animals can know matter and qualities such as hot or cold, liquid or solid, as well as determine tastes and colours.

We have witnessed that in the creative processes of life, at each higher rational stage, life continued to liberate itself from matter by shedding its mass. Accordingly, on the sealing of the animal life, we find that life at the topmost creative stage of man is completely liberated from the bonds of materiality. For the first time in its history, it has became conscious of itself as a non-material, self-conscious entity that consciously lives outside the physical universe consisting of successive rational stages. Thus, the human self or soul, as a self-illuminating entity, does not live in its physical body, which exists as the perfect animal species. The human self remains attached to its body and through its sense perceptions, man conceives the purpose of his life vis-a-vis the creation of the universe in the non-material form of ideals.

That the human self lives as a non-material entity can be established by considering the animal’s perceptual mind. The animal’s perceptual mind cannot rise above its physical state and cannot hold sense impressions without stimulus. Hence thoughts, language, reason and concepts which are non-material cannot be developed by the perceptual brain. Thoughts, language, concepts, etc, can only be developed by an entity or a personality which lives outside material objects and can differentiate and hold their properties in itself without stimulus. In other words, it must be able to know their true mental representation (we call it memory) without the direct sensory stimulus under spatial time and motion.

Cosmologists believe that life also exists on other planets of the universe. The universe itself is alive; it is not dead. It exists as a unified rational order consisting of a series of successive life stages. Each life stage exists as an independent world, one upon the other. And life is an inherent urge in creation for seeking and loving its Creator, with the purpose of meeting Him (consciously or unconsciously), making efforts for developing the appropriate discipline, relative to the rational state of its enlightenment.

Animal life lives over vegetable life, and man at his present creative stage lives over the animal life stage as well as all the preceding life stages. We call this the universe. Thus, the whole universe is a living universe. The concept of extra-terrestrial life is due to our ignorance of the creative processes of life and the universe.

The study of the development of the universe, relative to the progressive appearance of consciousness, has shown that the cosmos has developed in two successive rational phases of the processing of matter. Physicists say that the developmental process of matter is still very poorly understood in almost every case except one, the development of Earth. When we study the development of Earth and the start of organic life on it, we find that life did not appear on Earth until it, as a unified order, passed through a complete process of synthesis of various elements and developed its behaviour in a series of unified physical laws. Simultaneously, on the completion of physical laws and the appearance of life, the physical laws became immutably fixed. Had the physical laws accepted any change or modification on the appearance of organic life, the successive life tiers built on them would have been destroyed.

Similar is the case with the successive stages of life on Earth. The study of the development of life from vegetables to animals and from animals to man has shown that, simultaneously, on the appearance of higher life, the life values and forms in the preceding stages became immutably fixed, that is, no new laws and species were created in them.

The same law applies to the cosmos phase-II (low energy process) wherein planets developed around the stars. With the completion of physical laws of Earth, the further creation of physical laws stopped abruptly in the cosmic order. At the animal life stage also, simultaneously, with the accomplishment of sense perceptions in one of the leading animal species of man, the creation of new animal species abruptly stopped. Wherever and to whatever extent the sense perceptions had developed in each species, they became immutably fixed and the higher life process started only with changes of the leading species that is man.

Hence, with the accomplishment of physical laws on Earth, the law says that to whatever extent any planet may have developed physical laws, they are apt to become immutably fixed and that the higher rational (life) order must start on the leading planet which first accomplished the physical laws. Just as out of millions of animal species, only man accomplished sense perceptions, similarly, in spite of billions of planets around it, only Earth developed a unified physical order and rationally dominates the whole universe.

The scientific study of the various stages developed in the progressive rational orders shows that each life stage continues to stick to its own forms and values as a separate and independent unit. If man wishes to revert to the animal stage and become an animal, it would be impossible. If he does so, he will lose his self-illuminated, self-conscious entity.

The same is true of other stages of life. Once having completed the animal stage, no animal can jump into the self-conscious stage of man to become a human being or step down to the vegetables. Each stage of the universe is a complete plan which exists as a perfect independent living unit within the overall creative purpose of the Creator.

The one-way rational direction in which the creative process moves from stage to stage is essentially mental, intellectual and emotional, a fundamental attribute of the consciousness of life. This is established by the fact that what is really concrete has emerged at the topmost creative stage, at the present self-conscious stage of man, which is the attainment of self-consciousness.

It follows that basically all the systems of the universe, right from a particle to thinking man, have all the attributes of consciousness. In other words, everything is alive to its needs and purposes. As a matter of fact, we can determine the direction or differentiate between the various developmental stages of the universe only on the basis of succeeding consciousness expressed in the behaviour relative to each developed stage. This establishes that the only direction on which the development of the universe has proceeded is the direction towards achieving greater and greater enlightenment, awareness and self-consciousness. Thus seen, the future higher stage of man will consist in the development of his self-knowledge in the form of self-illumination and not in a still greater development and complication of his brain and body, which have since become immutably fixed.

In other words, the higher creative process would be more and more in the non-material form of spiritual and mental illumination and not in the reverse order of physical or socio-economic orders.

Repetition of values accomplished at a certain stage is against the developmental processes of the universe. As a matter of fact, no development would be possible if nature had repeated its gains accomplished at a certain creative stage. This establishes that higher life processes must proceed on Earth. If we assume that even after completion of the physical laws on Earth, nature still continued to develop physical laws on other planets, it would imply that nature has no higher purpose behind the universe. Scientific discoveries rule out such assumptions as it negates the laws of the creative processes.

Modern scientific discoveries give a rational view of the universe. If we assume that different kinds of physical laws exist on different planets, it would imply that the developmental processes of the universe are not rational and as such the universe follows no laws, has no aim behind its development and does not exist as a unified rational order. It would also imply that the laws prevailing on our Earth are not universal and our claim that the universe lives as a harmonious order would be proved wrong. It means that we are trying in vain to discover the reality of the universe if different kinds of laws are prevalent in different parts. Hence, such an assumption is rejected as it is against the rational development of the universe.

The Earth, infinitesimally small, smaller than even a speck in the mind-boggling vastness of the universe, is a prized entity as, in its recesses, lives man, who though overawed by the gigantic system, is still not overpowered by its magnitude. On the other hand, his short span of earthly life notwithstanding, he has the tendency, something inherent, to look beyond, a longing for new heights.
