Reconstructing scientific thought

By Muhammad Munir

A series of fundamental laws revealed by modern scientific discoveries reject materialist concepts and establish the theory of the creation of life and universe

THE MID-nineteenth century witnessed a series of discoveries in mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry and biology. New facts and natural laws were established, and new branches of science brought into being. This was the epoch when Charles Darwin published his theory “Origin of Species” in 1859 which was considered the first scientific theory to introduce the evolutionary concept of life. Influenced by Darwin’s theory Frederick Engels (1820-95) sought to explain the evolution of the entire universe through his work titled “Dialectics of Nature”. Thereafter we find a host of theories and write-ups, which supported evolution.

The impact of evolutionary theories has been so great that apart from the physical sciences, natural scientists sought to interpret scientific discoveries in sciences as sociology, history, psychology under it. However, a series of fundamental laws revealed by the modern scientific discoveries reject materialist concepts and establish the thory of the creation of life and universe.

The fundamental questions which still remain unresolved are about the origin of the universe and the nature of its development. Cosmologists and physicists claim that before the Big Bang, the nucleus mass of the universe was concentrated at a mathematical point — a singularity — in space from where it erupted. They claim that at the time the Big Bang exploded, the nucleus of the universe was very hot- at unimaginable temperatures. There was no element in such heat, no molecules, no atoms - nothing but free neutrons and other sub-atomic particles. As the temperature continued to drop, the cosmic mass continued to develop into aggregate proportions. The development of the universe would cease when the heat processes cooled down and reached a state of maximum entropy, that is, when the heat is uniformly spread in the cosmos. They believed there is no way of avoiding this destiny, as, according to them, under the Second Law of Thermodynamics we cannot convert heat into work unless we have a difference of temperatures.

They conclude, therefore, that the developmental processes of nature move in one direction only; they are irreversible.

Einstein discarded the view that matter and energy were concentrated at a mathematical point. According to him, there did not exist any point where matter and energy were concentrated. Both space-time and matter were inseparable. The Big Bang, therefore, created not just matter but space-time also. There was nothing, not even empty space “outside” for the Big Bang to explode into. It was not, therefore, a lump of matter located in an infinite void, which exploded suddenly. The universe did not exist; it was born at one time.

The physicists’ belief that the development of universe proceeds only in one direction because the cooling process of heat proceeds in one direction gives only a mechanical view , it does not explain the nature of the development of the universe which is the aim of all sciences. The great discovery made by the physicists is that the universe behaves as a complete rational order and that it has developed in a series of rational orders, which proceed from the simple to complicated orders in the inorganic stages and intellectual to conscious and self-conscious orders at the organic stages in one direction.

The appearance of higher and higher rational orders in one direction as the universe developed establishes that the nature of development of the universe is rational and not mechanical. The heat and expansion are simply the side effects and not the real cause of development of the universe. The real cause with which we can understand development of the universe is attainment of higher and higher intellectual and conscious enlightenment as the universe developed.

Scientific study has shown that the rational development of universe is not a continuous, unbroken like a thread stretched from point to point as claimed by the evolutionists. The universe has developed in higher and different rational orders; descending one upon the other. The higher stage rationally dominating the preceding stages living at a lower rational level. A stage of development when its run its course is sealed, immutably fixing the values attained at the stage. The next stage, starting simultaneously at its lowest rung, dominates the earlier stage/s as it progresses. Were it not so and the process of development continued unchecked at each stage (with varieties still coming) there would have been chaos and the higher forms of life and orders would not have emerged.

There are six stages, which are classified, relative to progressive appearance of consciousness in creation in one direction. These are: (1) The cosmos-phase I (High Energy process); (2) The cosmos-phase II (Low energy process); (3) The unified physical order of earth; (4) The vegetables; (5) The animals; and finally (6) The present Self-conscious stage of Man.

Some of the fundamental laws, which determine the rational stages relative to progressive appearance of consciousness in creation reject the materialists and evolutionists’ claim that the developmental process of life and the universe has been a continuous evolutionary process.

Different stages succeed each other in a higher and different kind of intellect and form of conscious enlightenment. The unbridgeable rational gaps between the lower and higher stages is thus a scientific fact necessitated by the creative process which aims at creation of infinite divergent forms and values which cannot otherwise be achieved in a single continuous evolutionary process.

But how could the universe, inspite of its creation in independent progressive rational, intellectual, conscious and self-conscious stages, live as a unified rational order. Especially when with the simultaneous sealing of the preceding rational stage, immutably fixing its values, the higher rational order cannot come down from its higher conscious plan. The theory lays three great faculties spiritually inherent in each higher rational stage:

I. We may call the first faculty as the “Faculty of feeding” through which each higher stage indirectly remains in touch with the preceding stages and whatever vitality it receives from the contents of the lower rational stages, it tries to interpret under its higher intellectual or conscious enlightenment the fixed behaviour of the external world. The feeding system does not exist only at the organic stages of vegetables, animals and at the self-conscious stage of man but it is a universal faculty, also existing between the inorganic stages of the cosmos and the semi-organic stage of the earth. It may be noted that only the higher rational stage establishes the feeding link with all the preceding lower stages. The preceding stage, which lives at a lower rational level, unaware of the higher stages living on it, does not establish such a link.

Biologists explain the feeding system mechanically by the phrase of “producers and consumers”. The lower stages produce and the higher stages consume for their nourishment. Such as the sun produces energy in the form of light and heat and the earth consumes. The earth synthesises and produces various kinds of minerals and substances under its higher unified rational order and the same are consumed by vegetable life for receiving energy (vitality) for living .Vegetable life in turn produces energy-rich compounds by fixing the sunlight and heat in the right proportions through photosynthesis . The rich energy compounds developed by the vegetable life are consumed by animal life through the digestive system, which extracts energy (vitality) for maintaining animal life. Animal life is used by the self-conscious human life by converting the same through the thinking process under its higher conscious enlightenment. Through this remarkable faculty of remaining in touch with all the lower stages, the universe in spite of its development in successive rational stages lives as a unified whole.

II. We may call the second great faculty as the “faculty of procreation”. Through this faculty each higher rational stage, which simultaneously on the sealing of the preceding stage develops as independent rational order, preserving its values from within. Under the procreative process, each higher creative stage spiritually acts on its own values and develops them.

III. The third great faculty which is inherent in each creative stage may be called the “Rational Faculty”. Through this faculty nature provides laws, determines values and gives direction through emergent creations to each developing stage from within the stage for accomplishment of values in the right direction. In the inorganic stages the direction was given by the creation of emergent physical laws; at the organic stages by the emergent creation of model species; and at the self-conscious stage of man by the emergent creation of consciously highly enlightened persons called saints and prophets.

All of these three remarkable faculties which have a spiritual basis and have been active in different forms throughout the development of the universe, right from the elementary stages of the cosmos upto the present creative stage of man, stand as basic pillars of the universe’s creative process in progressive rational stages. Through these inherent faculties in each developmental stage, the universe despite living in a series of independent successive rational stages behaves as a unified rational order. We will pick the thread further in the coming weeks.
