Sweets for the sweet

By Dur-e-Najaf

SOME of us have sweet teeth in our buccal cavities and these are the teeth that don’t let us watch our weight. Forcing us to ignore our ever expanding ‘expanse’ in the middle-region and the incessant comments of our friends, these teeth are also the reason that provide the rip roaring sound effects whenever we try to fit into our ever ‘shrinking’ clothes. However, despite all these drawbacks, most of us sweet-toothers, cannot resist the urge to have a mithai or two.

No matter what price we have to pay, mithais have always been an all time favourite in subcontinental households. Be it be rasgulla, laddu, barfee or mishti dohi every mithai has its own deliciously different taste and of course its own unique recipe.

In the past our mothers and grandmothers used to have their own family recipes for these mouth-watering deserts. And when they didn’t, the most they did was consult someone else for making any special sweet. But that was the 20th century.

No more does one have to call his or her Bengali friend to ask for the recipe of Mishti dohi. Nor does one need to beg your aunt to tell you how to make rass malai. For today, there exist many many web sites where you can simply log on and look for the recipe of your favourite dessert.

All’s well that ends well; a fine delicious dessert can cover a flaw in your main course or simply add a star to it. Test the recipes at Paktaste (www.paktaste.com). Or maybe you’d like to click to www.recipesource.com, a great source for Indian and Pakistani sweet dishes. Offering great many choices, one literally has to spend some time there before choosing a recipe. The site has simple, yet most delicious recipes of the sweets and desserts.

A real delight to visit is www.recipedelights.com. Here one can consult for recipes of sweets like chenaa murgee, soojhi ka halwa and mango rabri.

The net’s very own chef www.bawarchi.com is a site where we can find delicious desi desserts like pistachio lassi, sweet corn waffles, sweet corn stuffed bread and sweet corn pouches. Man, that’s a lot of sweet corn! And if that sounds really monopolistic, then www.pakvisit.com is the place to find wonder recipes of zarda, nugget pudding, kulfi and bana bread.

A collection of Pakistani recipes is available at www.desicookbook.com. This is a real experience for all you budding cooks. However, a word of advice (from experience), before you start to cook something decent, make sure you have all the ingredients BEFORE you start cooking

For the really exclusive Pakistani sweets there is www.pakirecipes.com where one can post any good recipe he or she knows and share it with many other food lovers. This way, you can interact with others who have also posted their interesting recipes. Age old family secrets are available here for your family. This site has recipes like mango delight, mithai samosay, naankhatai and sulsuley.

Sites like sugarindia.com have information about various sugars and those various sugars find versatile uses in all kinds of recipes. The web site claims, ‘nine times out of ten, we envisage ice creams and fudges when we think of sugars.’ But there is much more to it, as the site shows — coming from a wide assortment of nationalities.

This site has put together some very easy, healthy and interesting recipes for your taste buds. Try them ASAP.

A great place to get a lot of interesting stuff is Sanjeev Kapoor’s very own site, www.sanjeevkapoor.com. Sadly though, the beloved chef’s site, probably an online version of his famous TV show, is a paid site. For someone with a serious cooking hand and a credit card, this has got to be a must visit site.

The site www.indiatast-es.com contains recipes of sweets ranging from two dozen different kinds of kheers, like coconut, daal and even carrot. Recipes of cakes ranging from cashew, almond and sesame too reside here. A wide variety of halwas ranging from moong ki daal ka halwa, potato, pumpkin, guava and beetroot halwa are all here.

This site is a also paradise for laddu lovers, offering recipes called boondi laddu, vella sedai, besan kay laddu and bread laddus.

They also have recipes of some really delicious desserts like gulab jamun, rasmalai, ginger syrup and malai kofta.

A real online wonder is www.indoindians.com a beautiful site with recipes ranging from burfi, qalaqand, malpuda and balu shahi. The special thing about this Indian site is that it offers the recipes of sweets specific for festivals like diwali, raksha bandhan and holi

With recipes for the ‘Bold, Brave and the Beautiful’ www.ragistan.com has recipes from its contributors who belong to different parts of the subcontinent, ranging from Kashmir, Rajistan, Bengal, Punjab and Peshawar.

RecipeSource www.rac-ipesource.com is the new home of SOAR: The Searchable Online Archive of Recipes and your source for recipes on the Internet. The site has a separate section for Indian and Pakistani recipes and it includes all kinds of mithai we have in this region.

So next time your sweet tooth needs some desi satisfaction you know where to find the best, easy and simple recipes to fulfil your sweet fantasies.
