Stop staring
THIS is with reference to the article, Stop staring (July 13).
I fully accede with the author’s views about the treatment that females get in our society. Girls colleges are the best examples where females find it impossible to egress without facing the disgusting incessant stares. Perhaps this is the only duty that man fulfills with complete responsibility.
But what is the solution to this problem? In my opinion “tit for tat” cannot always work. How many people can you stop from ogling by ogling back at them? In most of the cases it will be you who will have to tolerate the comments and bear the sentences that cannot cause any harm to the people but can raise your blood pressure for sure.
I think this is where ignorance works. It is not because we have accepted it as a ‘norm’ of society but it’s because we have realized that this dilemma is because of lack of education. The solution is education and properly following the teachings of Islam.
My statements may be astringent but let me put one question. Have we looked upon us before blaming others? Are we not responsible for inviting the stares of the opposite sex? Tight jeans, trousers, short shirts are enough to attract others. Men can’t help by llook at girls with such clothes on.
Let us recall what our Tele-media (films and television) shows us. The clothes that leave the body half-naked are termed as ‘fashion’. It is this element that these boys and men try to find around them. True that this staring is also equally there for the head-covered girls in abaya but the initiating force that has spoilt our society is our so-called ‘modernization’.
Islam has also given the meaning of liberty that we take is wrong.

On the horns of a dilemma
WITH reference to the piece, On the horns of a dilemma (August 3).
The advantages for Pakistan, of recognizing Israel, as the writer mentioned were (a) the act of recognition will improve Pakistan’s station within the US, and that it will ensure economic and military aid to Pakistan.
No matter how so many promises be made or assistance be offered by the US, but there is not a 0.1 per cent guarantee that the US will stand by her words. Experience has shown that Pakistan has derived a little advantage from acceding to US demands. Pakistan has always partnered the US in its war against any state or group and has even complied with US demands to sign certain treaties and pacts. But the result has always resulted in Pakistan paying the price.
Recognition might give Pakistan access to Israel’s civilian and military technology, and it might even impel Israel to curtail its ties with India. The writer has himself stated that Israel is unlikely to give Pakistan access to advanced military technology as it would disturb India which is a much larger market in Asia. It is also most improbable that Israel will reduce its relations with India because of our single act of recognition.
Pakistan’s ‘Yes’ would surely contribute to further division in the Muslim world, which at least today, neither the Muslims nor Pakistan can afford. And it will alienate Pakistan from some Muslim countries which have been closeest to it.
Pakistan should never recognize Israel as such an action will be totally against its Ideology. Paksitan should continue to pursue strenuously its goal to ‘preserve and strengthen fraternal ties among Muslim states based on Islamic unity.’ For how long will we Muslims serve under the US?
