On positive thinking

By Kiran Nazish

PARADIGM is another word for perception. It is the way you see something, your point-of-view, frame of reference or belief. The way you take things and let things be done is the way you believe or think about them. Your believing or thinking is actually your perception or paradigm, that can be both positive and negative.

A book called Habits of Effective Teens really changed the way I think. It said: “Paradigms are like glasses. When you have incomplete paradigms about yourself or life, in general, its like wearing glasses with the wrong prescription....”

Sometimes people give their perceptions about various things, without even thinking about them properly or without even getting into depth. They restrict themselves to a certain boundary and never get themselves out of it. This is called ‘Limited Perception’.

Sometimes, you consider something in the account of your daily life and look at it from only one angle, ignoring all other aspects. In 1946, the head of 20th Century Fox, Darry F. Zanuck, said: “Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”

We all know today that television can be a blessing, and it goes to show how irresponsible some people can be while making statements. The idea is to come out of limitation and tell your mind to see things in a broader context. The first thing to do is to tell yourself to have a positive outlook. If your thinking is positive, everything will seem clear and good. But if you look at life as a drag, things will wear you out even more.

For example, if you are up for a competition and you believe you can do better than others, then this kind of positive thinking will give you all the courage you need, brush up your talent and might lead you to do a great job. On the other hand, if you think those around you are losers, you may find yourself looking for evidence to support your belief. So, the whole idea is to think positively in order to get a positive result.

“Positive messages elevate, encourage and foster growth,” says Dr Ahmed Raza, a psychiatrist. Negative thinking leads towards the dark, making everything bleak and confusing, and hence wrong decisions and an irritable life. The more we take things negatively, the more we lose sight of other things. Besides, it robs us of comfort and leads to doubts.

People always do better when they feel better, not when they feel worse. Ask yourself this question: Are your perceptions leading you to a happy life or are they causing hindrances?
