REVIEW: A taboo subject?

Reviewed by M. Rafique Zakaria

DESPITE a cardinal fact of life, sex has always remained a taboo subject in our society and the country. Most people consider sex to be sacred or secret that is something to be covered rather than discovered. Oversensitivity and unnecessary secretiveness about interpersonal relationship and ignorance cause a lot of confusion and complication in solving sex problems.

Young boys and girls who are ignorant of the basic facts of life are usually alarmed by the normal physical changes as they grow into manhood and womanhood. Not knowing where to seek advice, they either suffer in silence or turn to their equally ignorant and misinformed friends who lead them astray or consult some high-sounding quacks who squeeze them financially and ruin them physically and psychologically. It is not only teenagers or newly weds that need such knowledge but ignorance about vital facts of sex are prevalent among older people as well. They refrain from seeking proper advice for the fear of being ridiculed. For them, it is hard to bear and difficult to tell.

Dr Zakir Molvi’s book Sensitive sex and marriage problems with solutions is a blessing for all those matured, married and unmarried men and women who keep groping in the dark to find the answers to questions that arise in their minds as they grow. Dr Molvi is a practising doctor and became interested in the subject of sex while he was editing a weekly medical advice column of Vatan (Gujrati) for fifteen long years. Most of the questions from readers addressed to the newspaper’s medical column pertained to sexual problems or information.

The book under review contains questions and answers, which range from the conservative to the ultra-modern sexual behaviour indicating a wide and deep generation gap and fast changing sexual attitude. The scientific approach to the problem from teenage to a ripe old age is the main feature of this book. The author has included all aspects of sexuality — from sex among insects, birds and beasts to homosexuality, celibacy and contraception. He approaches each topic frankly but scientifically which makes it convincing and gives a new dimension to the understanding of the subject.

The list of contents gives the questions discussed to enable the reader to have easy access to the relevant subjects.

The book can be safely recommended to adult readers without any discrimination between men and women.
