THE recent ban on carrying licensed weapons has instilled fear among the citizens who have legally acquired fire arms to protect themselves, their families and properties.

Ironically, criminals are carrying out their activities with impunity with their mostly unlicensed arms. This is a frustrating situation where one is helpless in front of these armed criminals who are now striking without any fear of being retaliated.

Private security guards have also been asked not to carry arms which is again a threat for business community which is already under constant threat by extortionists and kidnappers.

Had the government cleansed the city of criminal elements first and then asked the citizens to keep away their weapons, the decision would have been taken positively. But, at the moment, law abiding citizens are sitting ducks with no protection of any sort.

This is true. The question is, who is benefiting from these bans? Instead of empowering the law abiding citizens with licensed weapons to protect themselves, which is the main reason people are granted weapons licenses in the first place, such bans only serve to make the criminals even more at ease. People are being shot at and killed for petty crimes like phone snatching. However, the concerns of the law enforcement agencies are also real as licensed weapons are also used in some crimes. But the ratio of licensed weapons used in crimes is much less than unlicensed weapons. Further, licensed weapons are not used in kidnapping, burglaries, car theft and snatchings at gun point etc. Because of these bans, the law abiding citizens fear the law enforcement agencies more than the criminals themselves. It also gives the impression that the law enforcement agencies fear the law abiding citizens more than the criminals themselves. Ban or no ban, criminals will always carry and use weapons, licensed or unlicensed. Therefore, by lifting these bans, the only additions to the weapons carrying people will be of those people who are not criminals. The law should allow the law abiding citizens to carry their licensed weapons without the need for a carry permit. This will prove to be a real and effective deterrence against the criminals. The law enforcement agencies need to put some trust in law abiding citizens as most of them are not criminals and earn some trust and respect in return also. This will create real and effective public partnership with the law enforcement agencies. Let the law abiding citizens help you fight crime.
