The talkative boy
There are some people who talk a lot and this is the story of such a silly boy, Mike, who talked unnecessarily.
One day in his school, during the math period, everyone was doing the assessment quietly around him. Andrew was sitting next to him. Mike, who was not paying attention to his test, decided to tease Andrew.
“Be quite, Andrew!” Mike turned to him and said.
“But I am not talking,” answered the surprised Andrew in a low tone so that the teacher wouldn’t hear them talk. At this, Mike started laughing.
Then Mike turned to James and said the same thing. Irritated, James answered, “I am not talking, you are!”
This time the teacher heard the boys and wrote minus five marks on their answer sheets. James was very upset at this, but Mike wasn’t bothered at all.
In the evening, Mike and his friends were playing cricket in a playground near his house. His team was balling and Mike was the wicketkeeper. The game was at a very crucial point as their opponents needed four runs on the last ball to win the match.
When the bowler was about to bowl, Mike started disturbing the batsman by saying something to him. The batsman complained to the umpire and the umpire told Mike to behave himself. But Mike found the whole thing funny and started laughing, he was still laughing when the bowler bowled and so he missed catching the ball which would have easily got the batsmen caught behind wicket and won the game for Mike’s team. The ball went on to the boundary line, giving the opponents the much needed four runs.
All the players of Mike’s team were upset at him for being careless and making them loose the match, but it had no impact on Mike.
Next day in school, their teacher was explaining the homework to the class but Mike, as usual, was busy talking with his friends. Their teacher told the class to do page 46 of the science workbook, but he was busy talking so he didn’t listen and later noted in his dairy ‘Page 41 of English workbook’.
The bell had rung for the school to be over and the teacher was checking the homework dairies in hurry. She quickly checked Mike’s dairy and said, “Now keep your dairy and pack your bag, because it’s home time.”
In the evening when Mike sat down to do the work, he did the wrong homework, which was more difficult for him because they had not done the topic in the class. The next day when he showed his homework to the teacher, she was shocked and asked, “Why you have done the wrong homework?”
Mike replied, “Wrong? You said we should do page 41 of the English workbook.”
The class started laughing at this. Then Mike’s teacher took him to the principal’s office and complained that because Mike always talked in the class, he didn’t pay attention and noted the wrong homework. The principal stopped all his sporting activities for one month, but Mike didn’t seem to be affected.
Then it was time for the school’s annual sports day and Mike was good at sports so he was sure that he would get the first position in his race. When his sports teacher was explaining to the participants the rules of his race, Mike was busy talking to someone and didn’t listen to the instructions properly. And when his race started, he didn’t know what he had to do and so he lost the race.
Then came Mike’s birthday and he woke up early due to excitement. Soon after breakfast Mike sat down to call up his friends and invite them for the party in the evening. Mike spent a long time talking to each of his friends, and finally his mother became impatient and came to him.
She said, “Mike, will you please get off the phone! You have been talking for hours!”
Mike quickly answered, “Sure mum, just give me a few more minutes…” and turned back to continue chatting.
“You better hurry because I need you to go and get your birthday cake from the bakery around the corner. You can choose your own favourite flavour,” mum instructed.
Mike just answered, “Sure mum!” without actually listening and understanding what his mother had said, thinking that she was just telling him to end the telephone call.
After he put the phone down, Mike felt that he should have a haircut to look his best in the evening and went to the kitchen, where his mum was making nice things for the party in the evening, and asked her for some money. She thought he was asking her for money to buy the cake and told him to take it from her purse.
Mike went to the barber’s shop, which was also nearby, had a haircut and came back and kept the leftover money back in his mum’s purse.
In the evening, his friends came over and they had a lot of fun and played many games. Finally mom called everyone to the dinning area and asked Mike for the cake,
“Cake? I don’t know where it is!”
Bewildered, she asked, “Didn’t you bring the cake? I had asked you to get it in the morning when you were on the phone with your friends.”
“No,” Mike answered and became sad. All his friends made fun of him and the fact that there was no cake in the birthday party.
At first his parents thought that they should go and get a cake for Mike, but they realised that Mike needed to learn a lesson. Thus Mike’s birthday, a day to enjoy, became a very sad day for him as he didn’t have a birthday cake to cut and his friends made fun of him.
That night when he lay in bed to sleep, Mike realised that his non-stop talking not only disturbs everyone but also makes him pay less attention to what people say to him. He vowed to himself that he would not talk so much now and will be more attentive.
The next day at school, the classroom was very quiet and the teachers conducted their lesson in peace because Mike didn’t talk unless he was spoken to. And everyone liked this new Mike.
