LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain and wicket-keeper Moin Khan is likely to get a role in the national team management, well-informed sources have told Dawn.

According to sources, 41-year-old Moin, a veteran of 69 Tests and 219 One-day Internationals, was interested to get a role with the national team for which Moin also had the backing of former captain Wasim Akram.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been considering Moin, who holds good reputation in cricket circles, for a suitable post in the team management.

One feels it will be tricky for the PCB to adjust Moin in a pure cricketing role in the national team management considering head coach Dav Whatmore, fielding coach Julian Fountain and bowling coach Mohammad Akram have all signed two-year agreements with the board.

The only likely post for Moin may be of team’s manager. Naveed Akram Cheema, the current national team manager, has got appointments on tour-to-tour basis during the last two years or so. However, again it will not be easy for the PCB to replace Cheema with Moin since the former has earned admiration during his tenure as manager.

It is significant to mention here that no major controversy involving national squad — primarily relating to players discipline — emerged during Cheema’s term.

Moreover, sources said, if the PCB failed to offer a suitable post to Moin in the team management, the former wicket-keeper would be interested to become president of the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) in place of veteran Siraj-ul-Islam Bukhari, who is going to complete two terms of tenure in May this year.

Moin expects support from the PCB in this regard.
