THIS is with reference to Karam A. Siddiqui’s letter ‘PAF: discipline and quality’ (March 7).
A modern air force needs to review its concepts of ‘discipline’ and ‘equality’.
Discipline should not stop someone from thinking independently as ‘yesmanship’ creates stagnation in an organisation. Freedom of expression is one’s right, whereas taking decisions is commanders’ privilege.
However, retaliatory actions on the part of the organisation reflect immaturity and lack of self-restraint and discipline.
Discipline only means setting up the perfect environment to achieve the goals you have. So, if we have any regulations which affect this goal, they must be reviewed.

As an enemy, how gratifying a feeling it must be to keep on reading about the wide cracks and discontent in one of the country's top notch security outfits.

It is very disappointing that such comments come from people who are known for simply giving to their students because for the students the teachers of early days are like the torch bearers. There is a very professional way of recording the complaints / suggestions to the superiors in the armed forces & they are heard on merit. Making such thing public, especially after acquiring all the benefits of the service is not conceivable! In the civil, the teaching profession is last on any list of a youngster & only those join this profession who could not get a job in other elite services in public or private sector. Whereas, on the other hand the Officers of all the equal ranks get similar benefits in the armed forces. Interestingly, till the recent past more educationists used to get a deputation abroad as compared to the Officers of mainstream branches of the PAF! Therefore, the educationists in the armed forces are much better off as compared to their counterparts in the civil.
