HYDERABAD, March 6: A department of music & performing arts at the Institute of Arts & Design at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Mughal on Wednesday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Mughal said that civilisation could be protected through arts, communication, design and music which would be taught to young generation at the department.
“An artist cannot become an extremist,” he remarked, and hoped that the department would help eradicate extremism and terrorism from Sindh and the country.
“Those inclined to terrorism are actually misguided,” he said, adding that an artist could understand the value of human life. He observed that there was a lack of institutions of arts and said that music, art, design and communication would be made compulsory subjects in all science departments of the university.
The vice chancellor went round the institute and lauded works of students, who had displayed their theses, paintings, portraits and other creations.
At a musical show organised by the institute, Ustad Ameer Ali, Fawad Ahmed and Ustad Hyder Ali enthralled the visitors.
Prof Mughal constituted a committee, headed by Prof Dr Abida Taherani and director in charge of the institute Naimat Khilji, to organise an exhibition of students’ artworks. He also announced that awards would be given to brilliant students.
