NEW DELHI: India wheeled out a new long-range nuclear missile that can hit anywhere in China and warned rival Pakistan not to take its friendship “for granted” as it celebrated its Republic Day with a big parade Saturday.

India successfully tested last April the Agni V missile, which has a range of 5,000 kilometres and can strike across the Chinese mainland and even hit targets as far away as Europe.

The first appearance in the annual parade of the Agni V — seen as marking a significant upgrade of India's nuclear deterrent — came along with the display of other military hardware acquired as part of a massive modernisation drive costing tens of billions of dollars.

The parade along New Delhi's ceremonial Rajpath, or King's Avenue, also included floats marking India's rich diversity and a tableau marking 100 years of Indian cinema wrapped in reels of film and embossed with movie names.

Large areas of the capital were sealed off for the celebrations — a traditional show of patriotic fervour — where Bhutan's king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was the chief guest.

India's shorter-range Agni I and II were developed with Pakistan in mind, while later versions reflect India's focus on China as well. India and China have prickly ties and a legacy of mistrust stemming from a brief border war in 1962.

On the eve of Republic Day, marking proclamation of India's constitution, President Pranab Mukherjee told Pakistan in his annual nationwide televised address that New Delhi's hand of friendship should “not be taken for granted”.

His speech, aired again on Saturday, came amid a ceasefire which took hold last week in disputed Kashmir after the nations agreed to halt cross-border firing that has threatened to unravel a fragile peace process.

“We believe in peace on the border and are always ready to offer a hand in the hope of friendship...but this hand should not be taken for granted,” he said.

Before the ceasefire, Pakistan said three of its soldiers died in firing by Indian troops along a de facto border dividing Kashmir between the two nations.

India, in turn, accused Pakistani troops of killing two of its soldiers, one of whom was beheaded, and the Himalayan region remains on edge.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since partition in 1947, two of them over Kashmir, a territory which both claim.

Snipers manned rooftops along the route of the parade in New Delhi while helicopters monitored the area from above. Tens of thousands of security forces were deployed in the capital and country for the holiday celebrated across India to mark when the nation's constitution took effect.

In his speech, president Mukherjee also said it was time for India to “reset its moral compass” following the gang-rape and murder of a student last month that ignited nationwide demonstrations to press for better safety for women.

The death of the 23-year-old woman, “who was a symbol of all that new India strives to be”, had shattered the nation's complacency, he said.

“We lost more than a valuable life — we lost a dream” and “we must look deep into our conscience and find out where we have faltered”, he said.

Another very hypocritical and self serving statements by the Indian leadership! The Indians beheaded Pakistani troops in Kargil on more than a few occasions. For them to cry over dubious claims of beheading and act as if this is something unprecedented is mischievous to say the least. Perhaps the editor/s of this newspaper should also notice this piece in the Hindustan Times: http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/KaranThapar/The-lines-of-control/Article1-995289.aspx "In her ‘Confessions of a War Reporter’, published in June 2001 by Himal, a well-known Nepalese magazine, Barkha Dutt recounted how she witnessed a decapitated Pakistani soldier’s head at Kargil. This is what she wrote: “I had to look three times to make sure I was seeing right … “Look again,” said the army colonel, in a tone that betrayed suppressed excitement. This time, I finally saw. It was a head, the disembodied face of a slain soldier nailed onto a tree. “The boys got it as a gift for the brigade,” said the colonel, softly, but proudly.” There are other incident recounted as well. So what moral high ground and hand of friendship do the Indians talk about? We dispute their claims of the recent beheading, yet there is clear and corroborating evidence of them having done the same to our troops in the past!

Worry about your international reputation where the word Pakistan has become synonymous with Terror. Worry about your ongoing wrestling between Judiciary and Government..India has able and stable leadership to worry about it's problems!! As far as the matter of Agni-V being shown in parade, I don't think it is anyhow related to Pakistan. Do not give so much importance to yourself. Thanks for your assurance, by the way it is understandable that if India is "attacked" then she has a right -like every country- to fight back, but I am bit puzzled by your usage of "or provoke"? Provoke by whom? Indian Politician? Media? or retired Generals and diplomats? We agreed that India has a substantial military might, but it is also a fact that it wont make anybody extremely worry -apart from Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Burma & Bangladesh- because we know that if India ever dare to use that multi billion dollar arsenal -shown in parade-, in result of her so called "provocation", which can destroy any country accused for provocation, but it is dooms day scenario for a region, bear in mind that few of her neighbours -in response- are very much capable to send her in "One upon a time" state. We hope for peace for great people of India, Pakistan and China and pray that Indian establishment would not be provoked at any stage in future.

Dear Pakistani brothers - let government and media do their job!! We as ordinary people should always focus on what we know is in our best interests. And that is Peace, Prosperity and Good relationships. Look at Imran Khan, who is trying to bring hope to Pakistan, by advocating better relationships with India. And I hope India will also reciprocate in same way. This way we will not spend our hard earned money on killing fellow human beings and instead spend on education and feeding the poor in our countries. I stretch out my hand of friendship to all similar thinking Pakistanis. Let us use our strength to create a long lasting bond of good will and hope. No wonder India wants to talk "peace" all the time !

@Zak, Your comparison of dragon and starving dog doesn't annoy us at all as I can see the clear frustration in you . But If I start saying with same tone , then You will be hurt . You come in the list of failed nations . You have got a country , which was created on the basis of religion , have got a language originated from battle field , have got a culture which is a borrowed one , got a religion , which is a imposed one . We stick to our culture and language . We don't care what anybody says about , we care how we can stand as a nation in this world . Too much anger is not good for health and mind .

We, the people of India and Pakistan sow guns in our fields instead of rice and wheat. That is why millions go hungry in our nations whereas those who sell us arms get rich on our expense. When will this end ? If Germany, Britain and France can peacefully coexist in one union, what is wrong with India and Pakistan? We were not bitter enemies 70 years back, instead were brothers.

Yes we remember Mukesh, you refers the Pakistani missile test when derbies were found on the way, while it hits the set target successfully. Just refreshing your memory too, we also remember the funny video on youtube when Indian missile took reverse gear and according to "FOX NEWS" Indian ministry of defence declined for the comments over phone, as the people responsible to give a statement were at the test site :) hope they were fine :) hope they will also issue the latest test video on youtube :)

I would love to see both India and Pakistan to be very rich and powerfully . But please tell me why Pakistan continues to borrow money from the west for various projects? You do know both India And Pakistan need assistance from the western countries to improve the living conditions of the Poor .It is better to except the facts rather than denying them.Trust you will understand.

Those who suffered economic losses and lost their houses in Muzaffarabad earthquake are still living in tents & internal refugee camps. Those who lost their livelihoods in floods haven't received any compensation and all the money that Pakistan collected for relief went to lining up the pockets of politicians, administrators & generals. We help our people, struck by natural disasters, with our own money. In fact we have helped Srilanka & Indonesia with their tsunami rescue efforts. Your Navy is not to be seen anywhere near the area. you people live on scraps thrown by China, US, UK etc.

Thanks the Dawn for balanced reporting. I also went through the comments available on the website. In fact, I am of the considered view that the majority people of both countries do not war, but the ruling class uses emotional statements and force the majority people to think over in terms of war. We got entrapped in our thinking and begin to think the neighbouring country is our biggest enemy. Terrorists attack and the border skirmishes sometimes add fuel to fire. We are living in democratic countries. The mindset must change. We can only hope. Yours faithfully; BIMAL CHANDRA JHA Samanpura Road, Patna, India

A drama staged by Indians to scare her neighborers. They know that if they even think of using these show pieces they will get it back in their right places. Just feel happy by displaying your wasteful expenditure, Indian! don't you make the mistake of ever using it.

india has no intention to use it and india has never ever attacked any country. These arms are for self defense and our leaders have repeatedly said this. I also believe in peace and hope that these missiles will never be used in indian subcontinent. But it is my humble request to you that please stop glorifying your nuke bomb and missile because if you ever use it, india will suffer a huge damage but Pakistan will be wiped out from the face of this earth. Hope better sense will prevail on both sides

@ZAK We need such deterrent to maintain the peace in the region. After all that Arsenel is for our defence only but not to intimidate neighbors. Look at your own nukes. At any time they can destroy your nation. Terrorists have their eyes on them.

atleast india would be left with once upon a time state, however it will ensure there will be nothing left of her enemy, and the existence of it will remain in history books. We all know who provokes everytime and you don't seem to be so naive to divert it on indian politicans, media or whoever... i am proud of india and its policies.. india's neighbour should have thank their lords that they don't have US or Israel sitting beside them.

for your FYI, India's nuclear policy is 'no first use', and its common sense that if you think of going nuclear then there would be some reactions too.. may be some sort of retaliation as well, however i know my country and unless there is a nuclear missile attack which covers even 5-10 km radius as her neighbour seem to posses them, then i can only fear for india's retaliation with a full scale attack from all sides... so ball's in india's neighbours court ;) think bot it too :)
