KARACHI: Former Pakistan players on Thursday said it was surprising to see that Misbah-ul-Haq’s tremendous contribution to the national team’s success was not found good enough for recognition at the annual PCB awards ceremony held in Lahore last week.

While Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez walked with most of the awards, Misbah was ignored by the three-member committee formed to select the winners.

“It is very disappointing to see that someone like Misbah who can easily enough be rated among Pakistan’s most successful captains has not been acknowledged by the PCB during the award ceremony,” former captain Rashid Latif said.

“It is sad that we have always tended to overlook the contribution of Misbah to Pakistan cricket. He has led the side maturely at a time when Pakistan cricket was going through its worst crisis.

“But being a gentleman that he is, Misbah has not protested over this. If I had been in his place or any other cricketer would definitely have protested over this injustice,” Latif added.

Misbah, 38, took over as Pakistan captain soon after the nasty ‘spot-fixing’ scandal that emerged in England in August 2010 and has since led the country to several fine wins in Tests over England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Former Test batsman Mohsin Khan also felt that grave injustice had been done by the PCB in not recognising Misbah’s contribution to the team at the annual awards.

“He should have been given a special award because I know from close how well he has managed the team and kept the players together in reallt tough times,” Mohsin said.

He pointed out that in 2010 and 2011 Misbah shouldered the Pakistan batting on most occasions.

“It was the first time the annual awards were held and Misbah was not given any award which is sheer carelessness from the board.”

Another former captain Mushtaq Mohammad said Pakistan’s Test and one-day teams still needed someone like Misbah to lead them.

“He brings a stable influence to the team and in the dressing room. The team needs a calming influence and a mature player like him, specially in Test cricket, who can lead the team well besides batting for long periods,” Mushtaq said.—Agencies

man please also don't forget he has been leading bunch of new comers in Test or One day who didn't had sufficient test or ODI experience behind them when he took up Captaincy of Pakistan.Cautious approach is always best when you have bunch of new comers playing together.

Individual fine player doesn't transform into result. You have new players like Azhar Ali,Asad Shafiq ,Misbah Haq who put the rear guard down and put price on their wicket, that has been reason for Pakistan consistent performance in Test.In past Pakistan had lot of individual stars but they didn't combined well as team which could win most of Test matches. That is the difference in current squad where guys like to spend more time on wicket and then accumulate run as time passes on.This is where Indian team has been lacking, individual brilliance but very inconsistent performance and lesser said about test ,its better.Who won't want 3rd best successful Captain like Misbah to lead the team.Dhoni performance was not upto mark in England cricket test series and immediately after Test series ,England has sent their senior guys have sent to rest to get ready for Ashes. So suddenly Indian team performance has gone up in last one day once the key players rotated in England team to provide them much needed rest.

Does it take away credit from him for being 3rd most successful Captain in history of test cricket? Even his one day Successful rate is among the very best of Captain. Not sure whether you were talking about T20. In his last 5 Test Match innings for Pakistan, he has notched up 458 runs at a very high batting average of 152.67 . In his last 5 ODIs as well, Misbah has made 190 Runs at an average of 63.33.If that is not good enough,I don't think anybody is better than that whether in Pakistan or any other cricket playing nation.

We are a Thankless nation! Also as cricket viewers we love the giimmeckry of tape tennis players and 20-20 slap dash cricket. Hence most International observers who can see from a neutral perspective what good Misbah has brought to once maligned team full of stars and egos and turned them into a tight unit and brought stability to the team. The International commentators get baffled that a Captain who has been one of the most successful Captains in Pakistan Test history is treated with such disdain and disrespect by its own people. Misbah deserves an award. As a batsman he has always been reliable in Test matches and ODI's but as a Captain his contribution is greater. He has kept the team togather and groomed younger players. The only Captain to whitewash England in our history and only one since Imran Khan that led us to a series win in India. Thank You Misbah!

Misbah deserves The Captain of the year award for his leadership and temperament. He is such a good player and he keeps the team under control. we shouldn't talk about his age and retirement because it is his own decision. he is fit and has the ability to guide Pakistan to more victories. God bless Misbah and God Bless Team Pakistan.

Misbah has brought a change in the mind-set of Pakistan batsmen. They are now more stable and has learned how to stay at the wicket. Pakistan batsmen were renowned for its batting collapse. With brilliant bowling combination, we need our batsmen to score runs. Though, many people call him tuk-tuk, but that's what is needed in the forthcoming South Africa tour. Just stay at the wicket to frustrate the SA bowlers. Give the team a decent score and let the bowlers do their job. Good Luck Pakistan team for SA visit.

After all favouritism, nepotism, jealousy, persoanl likes and dislikes are part and parcel of PCB? Iam not surprised except that due to lack of this recognition, it devalues the award given to others and makes a mockery of the "first award" for good performance!!! PCB should never selct a panel consisting of uneducated people who do not have an anlaytical mind!!!

It really disappointing how our own board honor player like Misbah. He has his limitation but he is very good captain who have taken team out of crises and if we don't consider anything else he should have been recognized on that. But as always board always does thing as after thought and leave bad taste.

Really... I'm surprised who he has won games without any demonstration of intelligence at the field. Perhaps there should be an award for his role where he converts easy win matches to highly difficult due to his overly slow paced batting. Not to mention his fielding isn't upto par either. Perhaps there should be a reward for him "Most Luckiest Captain" who won many matches without any personal contribution. Or who knows maybe he is a dressing room expert and really does a good job there. Yep! Handling those bunch of zero "IQ" level team mates might be a real challenge where Mishbah probably is shining.

great thoughts coming from these guys, and i fully agree with them. its time around that PCB stops taking things for granted. And not just Misbah efforts should be recognised but expeirience should be appreciated as well and PCB should treat Mohammad Yousuf with some more respect. We have to bit more civilised to recognise all this..... well said, Rashid, Mohsin and Mushtaq....

Salman Butt performed good and scored and also managed his team well, especially Asif and Amir. Not to forget earlier there had been rebellion against captains too (Younis, Afridi, Shoaib Malik). There is no such behaviour under Misbah. The team respects him and he has proved that he is a leader material.

sorry to say, but the spirit of the awards looked to be more "inclined towards" a retaliation to the ICC backed awards rather than praising the contributions of the current and former players. misbah's contribution cannot be understood by the administrators (politicians) and the "awam" here who seem to be born on the field of t20 circus and hardly know what test cricket (original cricket) is. ex-cricketers are talking sensibly here. our people do not want sensible captains like misbah. people want to see this team surrounded in controversies like before but that wont happen until misbah is around. people want to see captaincy in the hands of people like boom boom who have the full potential to take our legacy back to the stone age. pakistan zindabad.

Misbah stands tall amongst all. That three-member committee probably was morally broke to recognize this gentleman. However, we all love this calm and patient hero of ours..... We salute you, Misbah.... you are one great person.

He is a captain and his job is to win games. Pakistan still not finished article, we have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory many times. He ain't won the world cup etc. He is just doing his job, I am sure he is being rewarded with the salary. medals should mean nothing. The SA series will surely sort the men from the boys.

Misbah is undoubtedly one of the greatest captains of Pakistan. Very humble and thoughtful cricketer. Great to see a miracle after likes of Imran and Wasim as captains Historically we have continued to produced immature and emotional captains with few grey cells, some of them you still find in the T20 and one day team He will always be remembered for his great batting feats

Beside all the respect of ex players, Captain does not only means to manage team, He should perform as well, take last example of Indian tour, where was his name in the list, how much score behind his name. Look the Captains of other countries, they plan teams well and perform, look at Dhoni...

I agree that Misbah has done well for the team in comparison to failure captains such as Shoaib Malik and the cheat Salamn Butt. However, under no circumstances can you compare Misbah to the most successful captains such as the legendary Imran Khan and Inzamam Ul-Haq.

PCB is run by Politicans....Misbah does not have a vote bank or MNA to support hm. Except for his slow batting at times...as a CAPTAIN he has won more sereis than any other Captain...It is INJUSTICE ...not to give credit where it is due...SHAME ON PCB.
