No business as usual with Pakistan: Indian PM

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh warned Tuesday that there “cannot be business as usual” with Pakistan after last week's deadly flare-up along the border in disputed Kashmir. “It cannot be business as usual” with Pakistan, he told reporters on the sidelines of an army function.

“What has happened is unacceptable,” he added in reference to the killing of two Indian soldiers, one of whom was beheaded.

“Those responsible for this crime will have to be brought to book.”

Singh's comments came a day after commanders of the two armies traded protests over the border exchanges and the chief of India's million-plus military ordered an “aggressive” response to any fresh cross-border firing.

The Indian government has accused Pakistani soldiers of crossing into Indian territory and killing two of its soldiers on Jan 8.

Pakistan denies its troops were involved in any such incident and has accused Indian troops of killing two of its soldiers.

Foreign ministers of both sides have warned against escalating tensions.

But the Indian army chief of staff told his commanders Monday to respond “aggressively” to any future Pakistani firing across the de facto border in Kashmir known as the Line of Control.

In international relations mutual respect plays predominant role., No soverign nation should feel bigger than the other and that is the only way of living together. In war the people die and the warring nations get absolutely nothing except tremendous economic and human loss and disrespect in the international fora. We must learn from the history and try to be more sincere to the nation in stead of posing threats on account of bigness. Sometimes bigness becomes absolute abuse.

Really! 'Most people in Pakistan are living in ignorance'. Obviously, you have some kind of proof! By all means share with us. And you are the expert on history as well! Don't just make a dumb comment for the sake of making a comment. In case you haven't noticed, soldiers died from both sides. A simple statement, like, 'resolve all issues through dialogue would have made good heading'

People do die in conflicts, but there should be a respect for human remains, once a person die, no one care whether he is indian, pakistani or hindu or Musilm. The way one of the dead indian soldier was killed is a question ? Just imagine situation, a monther wanted to see her son dead body, couldn't see his face ? even Indian government treated Kasab very well and hanged him properly. they could have cut his head, that didn;t happen. Please respect human remains

Hostility across the LOC can be expected although ceasefire held its grounds for a decade, however I find it difficult to believe that Pak Army will kill Indian soldier and behead them – why – this is a very professional and well respected armed force and will not do that. Besides, why would Pak provoke India at this juncture when things have been moving along for better on all fronts. Is there a conspiracy ???!!!

Jan 15, 2013 11:43am
This warning should be coming rather from the Pakistani side. If India has an issue with LoC flare-up, why is it not willing to settle it through international body interrogation, which Pakistan is strongly suggesting ? I am sure an international neutral body will expose them well.

Mr Javed, I feel that the army in Pakistan is not in the control of the government, as it is in other parts of the world. Your army is always against the relationship with India, because that is the surviving point for the army. I may believe that your government is not at all included in the incidence and this whole thing is just executed by some lower ranks officer of the army because the diplomatic and visa talks were on with India. Killing a soldier is different, beheading is a different thing altogether.

Name a single Indian neighbour with whom you did not have any confrontation. You have military confrontation with Pakistan, China, Bangladesh. Really, it is a matter of shock that we could not mature so far in spite of the period of more than 65 years after independence, to ascertain what benefits our people may get further if the both countries again entangle in war for the disputes which could not be solved in spite of numberless discussions. The history has shown the failure of the "Two Religions-Two Nations" doctrine. At the time of partition, some greedy leaders were there to create the disturbance. Today, their next generations are willing to do so. Big powers need business and they make us scapegoats once we may internationalize our bilateral issues. Today, both countries have no comparison in terms of their resources and demands. Why do they waste the valued assets on creating such scenes? It is known fact that if financial and other exchanges are stopped by India, Pakistan would be big looser. If the head of one soldier gives some winning feelings to the person who committed this brutality, it must be kept in mind that many heads in turn may have to be returned in due course of time. Both countries may think over the matter again and take corrective action immediately before it is too late. Instead of war, they must resolve for reunification again like Germany did. If some of the leaders do not agree, the people of both countries can march ahead to break down the barriers. Let the deserted families meet their loved ones again.

i think it is not done! they should have kept the road to peace moving.. congress is just so fearful coz of coming elections next year that they wont make any policy to trouble there image. It is not a good step on responsible country like India. As an Indian, I think we should shown to pakistanis that we are open to scopes even after your brutality on LOC. We cant deny most people in pakistan are living in ignorance and instances like these just add fuel for people who want to use India and Indian issues to make hype of small things. They should take it seriously but shouldnt cut off all together as pakistan will never agree it did that incident, see the history of them. They feel proud in denying there deeds, so when we will start it again after couple months or years why not let the business go on as always. let people interact and decide who is culprit for once. enough of politics!

Mr Javed, You brought a valid point. as Indian, I don't expect or believe that professional Pakistani army can do that kind of atrocity. However, if you ask any person in thsi world, that who can do that kind of beheading and cut into pieces. You know that answer.!. Ask even any pakistani children, who dn't know anything abt politics and patriotism. Thats means, Either there were some bad elements entered into the pakistani military and by chance they got an opportunity to work in the LOC line border security force or some of your army officers were corrupted or supporting some militant group who can do this kind of job.!!. Ofcourse, you can think that Indian army itself did this to their own soldiers and acting like innocent person in international community.....everyone knows the ethics of indian military and atleast I don't believe, not only abt indian military but even pakistani military will do that. "All my conspiracy is some of army officers were supporting some militant group and they did this".

This "beheading of an Indian soldier" is a world-class drama being orchestrated by the Indian Congress in connivance with the higher command of Indian Armed Forces to appease the right-wing extremists and woo their supporters. This way Congress can win over many hard-liners from the BJP crowd. More so, this way the visa accords between India and Pakistan can be scrapped or put on hold indefinitely (already done, as of now), the peace process can be suspended, and the armed forces can demand a bigger piece of the pie for modernization/weapons procurement (this applies to both the countries). Pakistan first reported that 2 of its troops were killed by Indian firing on the 11th of Jan. The matter of the 2 Indian soldiers getting shot (with one purported "beheading") the very next day is nothing short of a conspiracy to derail the dialogue and the peace process. May I ask our Indian friends how is it possible that Pakistanis can cross over to the Indian side of the LoC, jump(?) over the electrified fence, kill 2 Indian soldiers, find time to behead one (what was stopping them from beheading the other?), and safely get back to Pakistan undetected? This is extremely fishy and reeks of the stench of a false flag operation by the Indian gov't. Anyway, it's the common people who'd suffer the most from the derailed peace process. The 1% on both sides never cared about peace and they never will.

I am pretty sure Pakistan Army did it intentionaly - to create a crisis situation at the border and try to further destabilize the already fragile PPP government. Like every time Indian politicians are just playing into their hands

Yes Pakistan is not capable of killing Indian soldier....clearly the Indian must have cut off his own head just to embarrass and destabilize Pakistan....Pakistanis never do anything violent and the entire world is conspiring against them...this is the Pakistani view of the world...

You are talking about 'High walls',that is great we have already 'fenced' our border but it seems your govt has different ideas...We have created 'fences' in reply your Govt. start digging underground ' rat tunnels' to enter India. So who needs to 'enter' India it's very much a fact which we are clearly visualising in your action. It's always your prime feature,'Yoy say something,Do the opposite'.

There is a bigger game at play here. One obscure Qadri and his shenanigans, PM's arrest order and diverting public attention by killing Indian soldiers on the border are ominous signs of something more sinister. People, don't miss the roadposts. God bless everyone

Aftab..India It is very unfortunate to hear all this at such a critical times. In the war no one is winner. The people of both countries dont want war.In Pakistan, the Army has a deep rooted interest to perpetuate hostality towards India. In Indian Political set-up, some political groups have a interest to see that both countries are at war.The people of both counties have very warm feelings towards each other.Recently,I have been to Karachi and Lahore,I am witnesse to lot of good will and love in Pakistani majaority towards Indian people. Both governments should allow the people to people contact, Let people should decide the fate of the sub-continent. The majority of Indian people have greate love and respect for the people of Pakistan.I wish we could see the unification of these two countries in our life time. Life is to love and enjoy.

We already built a fence at our cost. what you have to offer ? You are bankrupt, living on US aid, no industry worth its name. How much India will make selling tea, vegetables or sugar to Pakistan ? Just one pharmaceutical product to one European country will fetch us that money. Pakistan and its terror will harm Pakistan in long run, the farther India moves better it is.

Pakistan has a low tax/GDP ratio, which it is trying to improve. The current tax-to-GDP ration is estimated to be between 8%–9% which is far below developing other countries of the region such as India (15%) and Sri Lanka (18%)

Seeing this India-Pakistan rivalry makes me chuckle. Okay fine, India has "no business" with Pakistan. So what? Instead of complaining, arguing and getting itchy over this matter, get over it! India will have to fend for themselves and so will Pakistan. Calling each other names and degrading each other's countries won't tackle poverty or make your country thrive. End of story.

From what I understand, it's something like when you are under the captivity of fundamentalists and terrorists for too long, you begin to empathize with their point of view and begin to support and vehemently defend every dastardly action of theirs. I think it neatly sums up today's Pakistan.

An equal relationship is between equal partners. India and Pakistan are not equal in morality, size, economy, military strength, global goodwill, political clout. India is not foolish to want an 'equal' relationship with Pakistan. That is the reality of the world. Learn to live with it. It can be a dignified relationship, but never an equal one. Like that between India and the US. There is mutual respect and there are mutual red lines. There are common goals. But is the relationship equal? Nobody in his right mind will say so.

Oh, did we have "business as usual" before? There is nothing normal between Pakistan and India. And reading the comments of many of the Indians here, perhaps there never will be. Indians have failed in every test the peace process has asked for. Rather then trying to cool things down at the border, Indians are war mongering. Quite immature indeed. I hope more sense prevails on Pakistani side.
