LAHORE, Jan 1: Governor Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood has called a conference of provincial heads of all political parties at the Governor’s House on Jan 7.

The conference is aimed at developing a consensus against terrorism and discussing other challenges the country is faced with. An invitation in this regard had been extended to all political parties’ provincial heads, including Deputy Prime Minister Pervaiz Elahi and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

The governor said a high-level effective provincial peace committee would be constituted to maintain law and order in the province. It would comprise members of all schools of thought, provincial leaders of religious parties and notables of the city along with the chief secretary and inspector general of police.

“The committee will not only play a vital role in maintaining law and order, but also create an air of peace, fraternity and homogeneity among different sects,” the governor said while addressing a 14-member delegation of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam at the Governor’s House on Tuesday.

He said clerics belonging to all schools of thought could play a pivotal role in this regard. He added he had great respect for the clerics who had been playing their constructive and effective role for the welfare of the country and maintaining law and order.

The head of the delegation, Maulana Rasheed Ahmed Ludhianvi, congratulated the governor on his appointment.
