KARACHI, Dec 23: Nine men, including a policeman and an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, were gunned down in acts of violence in the city on Sunday, police said.

They said that Head Constable Aslam Ali, 30, was shot dead in the old city area within the remit of the Napier police station on Sunday morning.

Two gunmen riding a motorcycle targeted him when he was going to buy his breakfast and rode away. He was taken to the Civil Hospital, where he died during treatment.

He was posted at the recently formed K-9 Unit of the Karachi police.

With the killing of HC Ali, the number of policemen killed this year climbed to 115.

Trader killed in ‘sectarian’ attack

A trader was shot dead in what appeared to be a sectarian attack in Shah Faisal Colony on Sunday.

Police said two men riding a motorcycle emerged at the wholesale grocery shop of Azmat Ali, 50, in Shah Faisal Colony, fired at him and escaped.

The victim was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

The police said the victim had suffered a fatal gunshot wound in the upper torso.

Quoting area people, the police said the victim was among the organisers of a Muharram procession in the Shah Faisal Colony.

Following the medico-legal formalities, the victim’s body was brought in a procession to the Hussaini Mission in Shah Faisal Colony.

Tension gripped parts of Shah Faisal Colony following the killing. The funeral prayer was offered at the Hussain Mission in the evening.

A senior police officer said circumstances suggested that the motive for the killing was sectarian.

The Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen condemned the killing.

‘Muttahida man’ shot dead

A young man was shot dead and his associate was wounded in Nazimabad on Sunday evening.

Police said the incident took place in Gol Market within the remit of the Nazimabad police station, where assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on Raees Khan, 30, and Mohammad Muneer, 34.

Both men were rushed to the nearby Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Muneer was pronounced dead while Raees was admitted for treatment.

The police said that both men were residents of the same area and said to be affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

Violence after youth’s killing

A young man was shot dead and his associate was wounded when assailants targeted them in Baloch Para in Jamshed Quarters on Sunday morning.

Police said Shakeel Baloch, 30, and Ghulam Mustafa, 35, were sitting outside a house in Baloch Para when the assailants emerged there and fired at them. The suspects fled following the shooting.

Both men were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where Shakeel was pronounced dead while Mustafa was admitted for treatment.

Following the killing, tension gripped the locality and protesters took to the streets, pelted moving vehicles with stones, lit bonfires to block Jehangir Road.

The law and order situation lasted for several hours. Finally senior police officer reached the scene and persuaded them to end their protest.

Man shot dead

A young man was killed in a drive-by shooting on Hawkesbay Road within the remit of the Mauripur police station.

Police said that two assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on Kamran Shafqat, 25, who was walking on the road, and rode away.

The police said the victim died before he could be taken to hospital.

The police were not sure about the motive for the killing.

Man killed by robbers

A man was shot dead while resisting a robbery bid on Sharea Faisal on Sunday night.

Police said Fayyaz Hussain, 45, resisted two armed bandits who tried to rob him at gunpoint near a famous restaurant on Sharea Faisal.

One of the robbers fired at him and escaped. However, a police patrol arrived at the scene and arrested one suspect, while his accomplice escaped, said Bahadurabad SHO Haider Masood. The victim died before he could be taken to a hospital.

The held suspect was identified as Taimur Haider and a 9mm pistol was seized from him.

Labourer shot dead

A young labourer was shot dead in the Lasbela area on Sunday evening.

Police said that Waqar Khan, 24, was sitting outside his home within the remit of the Jamshed Quarters police station when unknown men fired at him and fled. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police said the victim was a labourer.

Bullet-riddled body found

The body of an unidentified young man was found on Nishtar Road within the remit of the Soldier Bazaar police station on Sunday morning.

Police said the trussed-up body bore torture marks and the victim had been shot in the head.

The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities from where it was moved to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Strangled

The body of an unidentified young man was found along the Malir river within the remit of the Korangi Industrial Area police station.

Police said the victim had apparently been strangled as there were marks of a rope around the throat.

The body was shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities.

‘Bandit’ killed

A suspected bandit was killed by people during a botched robbery attempt in Nazimabad on Sunday evening.

Police said the incident took place at a CNG station, where two men riding a motorcycle tried to snatch cash and valuables from the people present there.

In the meantime, a man who was waiting for his turn at the gas station pulled out his licensed pistol and shot at the suspects. One of the suspects suffered bullet wounds, while his accomplice escaped on their motorbike.

The 23-year-old wounded suspect died before he could be taken to hospital.
