WE always react negatively to every government decision. Everyone talked against the one-day ban on riding motorcycles in Karachi which was later suspended by the court. Considering ground realities, lack of sufficient strength, efficiency, intelligence and ability of preemptive action, the only choice we are left with is a ban on riding motorbikes.
It is true that almost all the targeted killings are carried out by motorcyclists. It is also true that considering the strength of our law-enforcement agencies this seems a wise decision until their capability is improved.
Just because this causes inconvenience, we cannot let target killers to carry on massacre of the innocent people. If you ask families of those who lost their lives by these killers, they will definitely suggest putting the ban for indefinite period. We are in a state of war.
Unless we are not ready to sacrifice our some of the conveniences, we are not going to win this war. After Sept 11, the American people stood like a nation. They bore and still are bearing some of the worst restrictions in their lifetimes.
Unprecedented security arrangements have been made at the airports, train stations and various other places which cause public suffering, but they are considered necessary to protect their lives.
This is the reason they have been able to capture their most wanted enemy in a far-flung area, while in Pakistan not a single terrorist has been convicted.
The whole nation has to fight against terrorism. This in not only the responsibility of the law-enforcement agencies, but we all have to be ready to fight terrorism and sacrifice in this war.
FAYAZ MUJTABA Karachi
THE sudden increase of acts of terrorism, especially in Karachi, Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Rawalpindi on Nov 21 highlights the importance of preventive measures to curb the menace of terrorism, which is causing severe losses to men, material and reputation of the country.
In fact, now it looks that the forces adversely inimical towards Pakistan have launched an all-out attack, which has no parallel in the past.
For Pakistan, it is now almost a do-or-die battle, which cannot be won alone by our security forces fighting and suffering heavy losses of men and material. It cannot be won without the total involvement of each and every citizen of the country.
In the past, cases of terrorist attacks on the GHQ, PIDC House and PNS Mehran air base, it was reported that the gang of attackers were residing in a rented house for quite some time in an area not very far away from their targets.
It was also reported that although the neighbours of these houses were suspicious of these tenants, yet they kept quiet and did not tip off the area police about these tenants.
Under the prevailing circumstances there is a dire need for motivating the public to remain extra vigilant in playing their role of defending the motherland.
The people should look out for the stay and suspicious activities of the terrorist in their area.In order to make the stay of terrorists at any place almost impossible, it is proposed to actively involve the entire population to look out and hunt them.
This objective can be easily achieved by the announcement of the government that a reward of Rs50 million will be paid to any person who informs the police about the terrorist staying in a house, hostel, hotel, rest house or any such place.
If the war against terror is to be won quickly, the entire population of the country has to be geared up and involved in the task of watch and vigilance.
