PESHAWAR: The sex scandal that has brought down CIA chief David Petraeus may be causing heartache in the Washington security establishment but the affair has prompted laughter among the Taliban.

Petraeus resigned last week to pre-empt revelations of an affair with his married biographer Paula Broadwell, bringing to an end a glittering military career that included a spell commanding Nato forces fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

A stony-faced Taliban official burst into laughter at the mention of the Petraeus affair during an interview with AFP in northwest Pakistan this week.

“What a b******! But all Americans are the same, it’s nothing new,” the official said, who did not want to be named.

The Taliban dealt harshly with adulterers during their brutal 1996-2001 rule in Afghanistan, dishing out public floggings for offenders.

The traditional moral code of the Pashtuns, the main ethnic group the Taliban draw their members from, also demands severe punishment for adulterers.

“From a Pashtun point of view, Petraeus should be shot by relatives from his mistress’s family,” the Taliban official explained.

“From a sharia point of view, he should be stoned to death.”

Petraeus, a four-star general married for 37 years, stepped down as head of the US spy agency just three days after President Barack Obama’s re-election over his fling with Broadwell, an army reservist who travelled to Afghanistan to write a glowing biography of the general.

The scandal has also implicated the current Nato commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, as well as an FBI agent and a glamorous Florida socialite.

The Taliban official said he was not surprised.

“It’s quite normal for Americans and Western people to behave like this – they live in free sex societies where nobody cares about this sort of thing, so what do you expect?” he said.

The White House has backed Allen and Obama has assured Americans the affair has not compromised national security.

He is a small fragile weak man...physically. Even fainted during a Senate presentation. His paramour looks more like a hermaphrodite or a transvestite than a woman. Difficult to visualize what kind of relationship could they be having in physical terms.

Taliban may be laughing but the millions of victims in Afghanistan and Pakistan of Taliban's brutality are not. Those who died or were injured or maimed from these suicide bombings are not laughing. In short laugh as much as you, the Taliban, want. The rest of the world is not laughing with you, we would be better off without you and your ideology of death and destruction.

Shariah Law is indeed the most civilized, humane, fair, merciful, and just law in the world. Don't be taken in by foreign propaganda and Psy-Ops tricks. Study it yourself, it will take a few years, but will be worth while to know the truth.

Point of article is? Should we support Taliban? This is saying as if there are never adulterous affairs in Afghanistan or Pakistan? No rapes? Just everyone leaves peacefully

“From a Pashtun point of view, Petraeus should be shot by relatives from his mistress’s family,” the Taliban official explained. I guess we can all be thankful they don't follow either Pashtun or Sharia laws in the US. Imagine a big, powerful country like that following such barbarism in its society or constitution, or worse, trying to get other countries too follow suit!

although i am not in a favour of TTP, but punishment of an adulterer who is married is stoning to death" which is quiet just.

Sex has always been the human weakness which has been inherited from evolution itself. Humans have evolved from non-human life and have emerged fromj the jungle over a hundred thousand years ago. Even thoughthe present human society is advanced, we have not yet adjusted ourselves to the pace of our development. Something unexpected and indeliberately happens to some of the most disciplined and powerful individuals which amazes and shocks everybody. A beautiful, attractive and smart woman can seduce the most controlled man. In this case, it is the fight between the two seductive ladies who were not able to tolerate each other. Taliban, however, do not understand love that is why they laugh.

What a pointless story or account from the Tali's. All i would like to say to the Taliban "All of you will be wiped out"! With all the inhumane accounts, these terrorists should be killed, that is all.

The Taliban deal brutally with adulterers. Yet they have not punished a single person accused of homosexuality. Neither have they ever issued any edict against the practice. Are they not aware that it is specifically mentioned in the holy Quran (as in the Bible) that whole communities were destroyed because of they did not shun this enormity? They sure know what to pick out and what to leave in religion! And where, may I ask, it is mentioned in the Quran that girls be denied education and their schools blown up? Remember, my ill informed Talibs, the very first word proclaimed by God to our prophet (peace be upon him)...READ!

What glittering military prowess was she writing??? Taliban with only grenade-launchers, AK 47s, hand-shot-guns, hand-grenades, IEDs, and just plain and pure faith, courage and valor, have successfully resisted, attacked, and defeated the 'INVADERS' with the most contemporary superior and advanced military technology and might...who are now quiet shamefully on their way out from Afghanistan...I think the Taliban should be glorified in the annuls of military strategy and history!
