KARACHI, Nov 11: A large number of writers, poets, journalists, civil society activists and politicians participated in a demonstration by making a human chain from the Karachi Press Club to the Sindh Assembly building on Sunday in protest against the Sindh People’s Local Government Act 2012.
The protest was organised by the Sindhi Adabi Sangat and the Sindh Writers and Thinkers Forum.
The protesters, including women and children, were stopped by the police at the Arts Council traffic intersection, where they were addressed by their leaders.
The police closed the gates on the Court Road, where the Sindh Secretariat and Sindh Assembly are located.
Speaking to the protesters, the speakers said that the participation of such a large number of writers and intellectuals in the formation of the human chain against the controversial local government law was a proof that men of letters had rejected the law and the government should withdraw it.
They said that writers and journalists in their writings had opposed the new law.
They regretted that the law was passed by the two ruling parties in a ‘hurry’.
They said that the campaign of the writers and journalists would continue after Ashura.
