Two hurt in landmine blast

MIRAMSHAH, Oct 26: Two people were injured when a landmine went off with a bang near a security post here on Friday.

A security man and a Wapda official sustained injuries when they were repairing a heavy power transmission line which was damaged after a stray mortar shell hit it late in the night.

Wapda technicians were busing in repairing the transmission line near the checkpost when the landmine exploded. As a result the two men received injuries. They were later shifted a nearby hospital. — Correspondent

Proclaimed offender killed

MARDAN, Oct 26: A proclaimed offender was killed while his brother received multiple bullet injuries in Gulmaila area of Lundkhwar village late on Thursday night, police said here on Friday.

A Lundkhwar police station official told Dawn that sub-inspector Mozamil Khan rushed out of the police station when he heard gunfire finding two persons lying in a pool of blood on a roadside. He said that the victims were later identified as two brothers, Arshid and Ghafoor, both being proclaimed offenders. Arshid died on the spot while his brother Ghafoor received several bullet injuries, he added.

A 12-bore rifle and 30-bore pistol were also recovered from their possession. Police said that the two were wanted in several cases involving sections 302, 324 and 704. Police have registered FIR against unknown attackers and started investigation. — Correspondent

Three die on road in Karak

KARAK, Oct 26: Three people were killed and two other injured in two road accidents here on Friday.

Police said that two persons riding a motorbike rammed into a tractor coming from the opposite direction in Kamali Zarakhel area of tehsil Karak. The two riders identified as Usman and Rasheed of the same area were critically injured. They were taken to a nearby hospital but both succumbed to their injuries on the way. In another incident, a motorcyclist, Rizwan, was killed on the spot when his motorbike slipped due to high speed in Ganderi Khattak area of the district.

In yet another incident, two persons Muzaffar Shah and Gul Nawar Khan of Takkikhel tehsil Takht-i-Nusrati were coming from Punjab when they caught in crossfire between two rival groups in Darshakhel area, police said. Both the passers-by sustained serious bullets injuries and were taken to THQ Hospital Takht-i-Nusrati. Police have registered a case. — Correspondent

Blast destroys hujra wall

SWABI, Oct 26: A bomb went off at the gate of hujra of a local elder at Kalu Khan village here on Friday, police said.

Local people said that unknown miscreants had planted the explosive device at the gate of Sharum Khan’s hujra during the night which exploded on Friday.

The blast destroyed the gate and boundary wall completely and partially damaged the building. The blast occurred a few second after some visitors had left the hujra, creating panic among the villagers. Neighbours said that the attack might be result of a personnel rivalry. Police have registered a case and are investigating. — Correspondent

Seed, fertiliser distributed

GHALANAI, Oct 26: The USAID in collaboration with the Fata Secretariat arranged a special function here on Friday to distribute high quality seeds and fertiliser among farmers and maliks of various areas of Mohmand Agency.

Speaking at the function, Haleemzai political naib tehsildar Shamsul Islam said farming, which was the major source of income of the local population, was badly affected due to militancy since 2007 and most of the fertile land had been left uncultivated.

He distributed 2,000 bags of 50kg DAP fertiliser and 2,000 bags of certified wheat seeds among the farmers of Haleemzai, Safi, Khewezai, Biazai, Pandiali and Ambar tehsils. He said the government was taking keen interest in improving farming in the agency. — Correspondent

Security for Eid prayers in Bajaur

KHAR, Oct 26: The local administration of Bajaur Agency has made foolproof security arrangements to prevent a possible terrorist attack during the Eidul Azha prayers and for this purpose hundreds of additional personnel of levies forces will be deployed at mosques and public places in the tribal agency.

A high level meeting of the officials of the administration chaired by political agent Abdul Jabar Shah was held here on Friday. It was decided that four to six security personnel would be deployed on every mosque in Khar and others areas of the tehsil during Eid prayers. This was also decided that services of volunteers of various lashkars and peace committees would be availed for the purpose.

Meanwhile, the local administration released 15 prisoners involved in minor cases from the agency headquarters jail. Bajaur Agency political agent Abdul Jabar Shah held a brief court inside the jail on Friday and freed the prisoners as a goodwill gesture on Eid. — Correspondent
