South Africa reached 122 for five in the 17th over in pursuit of the 153 required for victory against India, sending Pakistan into the last four on better net run rate along with Australia.

Sri Lanka will play Pakistan and Australia face West Indies in the semi-finals.

Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan handed a shock 32-run loss to Australia, who qualified regardless on net run-rate.

Pakistan made 149-6 after being sent in to bat in the group two Super Eights match at the Premadasa stadium, before a five-man spin attack restricted Australia to 117-7.

Prolific spinner Saeed Ajmal claimed 3-17, but it was 20-year-old Raza Hasan who was declared man of the match for conceding just 14 runs and taking two wickets in four overs of steady left-arm spin.

Both teams ended the Super Eights on four points each, which knocked winless South Africa out of the tournament.

“I am grateful to see the effort put up by the boys today,” said Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez.

“It was a big game for us and we needed to be at our best against a side like Australia.

“Once we got a good total, we knew we will do well because there was going to be help for the bowlers. Raza Hasan was brilliant, a great find for us.”

Australia advanced to the semi-finals despite the defeat due to having the best net run-rate in the group. The result left India needing an emphatic win over South Africa later on Tuesday to stop Pakistan's progress.

Sri Lanka and the West Indies have already qualified from group one.

Australia, who have never won the World Twenty20 despite taking four World Cup titles in the 50-over game, had breezed through four consecutive matches in the tournament before being halted by Pakistan.

“Pakistan outplayed us,” Australian captain George Bailey admitted.

“The ball turned a lot more than before and they used spin against us very well.

“The challenge for us now will be to get the winning form back in the semis.”

Veteran Mike Hussey was Australia's mainstay with an unbeaten 54 off 47 balls, as none of the other batsmen managed to cross 15 against the rampaging spinners.

Australia never looked comfortable after their in-form openers, Shane Watson and David Warner, were dismissed by the fifth over with only 19 runs on the board.

Australia, who needed to make 112 or more to qualify, achieved the target when Hussey cut seamer Umar Gul to the fence off the first ball of the final over.

Gul's two overs at the end were the only ones by a seamer as the spinners shared 18 overs between themselves.

Pakistan's innings revolved around left-hander Nasir Jamshed's 55 off 46 balls, which contained four boundaries and two sixes.

After the openers were removed by the sixth over, Jamshed put on 79 off 55 balls for the third wicket with Kamran Akmal, who made 32 before both batsmen were dismissed in the space of three deliveries.

Abdul Razzaq marked his return to the side in place of Yasir Arafat to make 22 from 17 balls. Left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc claimed 3-20 for Australia.

I wont deny credit to Paki bowling though however I still cant believe Aussie lost so badly. Of course Aussie knew the calculations before hand and so wanted to ensure that they loose with amargin big enough to make it tough for India. They knew if India progresses ahead, it will be invincible. If they wanted they could have lost with 5 or 10 runs but they had a plan in mind.
October 3, 2012 8:59 am
My Friend: if you read closely, a lot of Indians have written very positive about Pakistan. Try looking at the positive aspects. Remember, in life, if you want to find something positive, u will always find it no matter what. If you want to find something negative, you will find it no matter what!. Everything is a state of the mind!!. Enjoy the World Cup, Pakistan played brilliantly and are capable of lifting the world cup.

If I had the authority, I would tell Afridi to go home and rest for the rest of his life. These shameless creatures do not leave cricket because they can't do anything else.
October 2, 2012 3:34 pm
Politic. If Afridi / Shoaib Malik in team. Razzaq can't any chance, because his bater then everyone.
October 2, 2012 7:53 pm
for those flaunting the india's win over Pakistan: check the history. Boss for your kind information Pakistan is taking the lead in all formats except T20. so don't say that Pakistan or Australia were scared.

I love your spelling. Go get some elementary education angry young man of today's Pakistan. Better read Urdu newspapers. Spare poor Dawn if you will.

Well .. good performance by the Hafiz team and hope they continue their breeze to the final and won it

And you despite your education lack proper etiquette.
October 2, 2012 6:17 pm
To anyone here claiming that Aussies were afraid of India and that's why they lost, they should go back and look at the India vs AUS match again. They rather not play Pakistan who beat them 3 out of 4 last games.

All of a sudden Dawn looks like a Pakistani newspaper again, don't see too many Indians replying to this page?
October 2, 2012 3:45 pm
Pakistan team needs to realize that cricket is more about batting. Good bowling attack and good fielding are excellent support roles but cricket revolves around batting. Of the three activities, batting is more brain work too. Whoever is made chief of Cricket Board of whatever body should stop bragging about short term gains and chalk out a plan for improvement in batting of Pakistan team. Just saying that someone was a diplomat or an industry person, etc. is not wise. Grow up. Learn what leadership is.
October 2, 2012 3:33 pm
Well played and greetings to Raza for excellent bowling performance, Pakistan now have to give chance to upcoming fast bowler because the existing lot except for Gul are useless and he is also not getting any younger.
October 2, 2012 3:22 pm
Pakistan must consider merit in terms of players selection. Many of the current team members are out of form for ages. We take pride of having experties in Cricket but these guys are just killing our emotions.
October 2, 2012 5:54 pm
I am Indian fan. I feel sad when our team could not qualify for semi final. But I saw Pakistan fans were celebrating in stadium like they defeated India or they stopped India from coming into semi final. They have to understand Australia was scared of India this is why they played dirty game. Pakistan anyway is going home in next match. Anyway good luck.
October 2, 2012 5:54 pm
it was just brilliant performance given by pakistan n i think luck did matter alot so we r in semis well we will see u there.wish u good luck pakistani team:)
October 2, 2012 6:09 pm
Radical proposition but drop gull n play another batsmen we bowl afridi ajmal razz malice n hafeez, premadasa slow n will turn
October 2, 2012 6:09 pm
Look what a difference it makes by selecting Razzak for this game. He scored 22 valuable runs when needed in death overs. Imagine if Yasir would be playing and scored only 2 or 3 runs.
October 2, 2012 4:56 pm
Afridi body language has completely changed. as if he is untachable. This is not going to take him any where but ruined his performance.

I think Pak team played well especially the bowlers and fielding so if their batting gets better in semi against SL than it could be final inshallah against the Aussies again. So keep up the good work and may Allah (SWT)be with Pak team players ameen. They brought joy to nation so thank Allah(SWT). Keep up good work Nasir and Raza.
October 2, 2012 6:18 pm
scared of india ? surprised you are saying that even after the result you received at the hands of the aussies ?
October 2, 2012 6:20 pm
Dnt talk like loser's mate, feel PROUD PAKISTAN IN SEMIFANIL FOURTH CONSECUTIVE TIME. dnt forget Australia beat india in last, how come they scared of them ...hehe. If u understand cricket then listen , track was not easy at if Australia go for 150 with 5 down they might not get 112, risk involve in it. Your team played well cheers up. do support pakistan in semi if u have courage to do so :P

October 2, 2012 6:21 pm
where is that coming from ? we have made the semi finals of every t20 world cup and are the proud holder of the cup in 2009. If anything, we are probably the most consistent team in the world cup and for our arch rival (india) they have not even gone to the semi final stage since 2007. So much for having a strong betting side ?

Razaq has been consistently good, he always manages to deliver the goods.
October 2, 2012 7:00 pm
I don't understand why Australian batsmen were getting out lbw. Was it because of a fear if they try to get out with catches, Pakistan fielders will not be able to catch the catches? He he.

did you guys supported India in last match?

Both Ajmal & Raza are anything but bellow ordinary bowlers.
October 3, 2012 7:14 am
Inshallah! App ki dua sae. We will. Thanks for the positive and a great attitude. Thanks brother Singh for good wishes. We should all take the game as a game only. Many sensible Indians praise Pakistan over victory but some.........

October 2, 2012 8:11 pm
India had their fate in their own hands, not in Australia's. Also, we Aussies don't scare from any team - on most days Australia will beat. Having said that, the T20 game is such, that any team will win on their day.
October 2, 2012 8:15 pm
LOL- keep in mind that Pakistan destroyed India with a six very easily 2 weeks ago in a "warm up" match when that means nothing when it comes to a Pak India game - it was a real match. We won one, you won one. So much for your IPL! You are going home, we are going to the semis.
October 2, 2012 6:26 pm

Beside the nice factual representation by Dawn, I would like to thank on one hand Times Of India for depicting the match facts so magnificently which gave a vivid description of the way Pak bowlers outclassed Aussies and on the other, all praise for Indian friends for appreciating Pakistani team's brilliant performance and wishing them best of luck for upcoming matches. Hats off to all of you who have expressed best of gestures. That also shows how both sides on the border, people love each other. Though feeling sad for India but would like to wish them best of luck for next events. They did a wonderful job and earned my support throughout because of their consistent performance.

October 2, 2012 6:54 pm
I laugh at the claims that Australia, being afraid of India, delibrately lost with a big margin just to oust India from the semi final! Look at the history. Pakistan won more limited over matches against Australia. What about South Africa? They also made sure to reach 122 runs against India just to advance Pakistan?
October 3, 2012 2:02 pm
But we did yesterday.
October 2, 2012 4:39 pm
I 100% agree, Razzak is far better as an allrounder than Afridi and Malik. Razzak uses commonsense and plays according the match condition where as both Afridi and Malik lack this quality. Tell us how many times Afridi hit out on first ball without analyzing the need to stay, read the line and lengthof the ball hit the ball on merit. How much he will be afforded.

October 2, 2012 6:27 pm
Pak should to put serious efforts to upgrade their fielding, batting and keeping. It was a glorious victory but for semis we need to improve alot.BEST WiSHES FOR SEMIS:D
October 2, 2012 6:30 pm
Razzak is past his useful life on the field.

October 2, 2012 7:57 pm
Abdul Razzaq played today and Pakistan won. Has he played against India we would have defeated them big time. Shame on Hafeez for not playing him and utilizing Razzaq's experience in other matches. Razzaq is a match winner and on the other hand Yasir Arafat is a club level cricketer with no class in bowling or batting. He is only in the team because of Hafeez . I hope this creature by the name of Arafat would leave us for good and not make a comeback in the next game.
October 2, 2012 6:45 pm
Mubarak to Pakistanis, good news in bleak times. Inshallah Pakistan will win T20 World Cup!
October 2, 2012 7:53 pm
what hasppened in world cup if the team was "consistent"? Is Pak team only aim for semi-finals or aim for the cup? Bating needs improvement, pure and simple. Like the rest of the nation, please learn to accept constructive advice.
October 2, 2012 10:38 pm
I completely disagree with you. Afridi is a player for Final and Semi-final, he is just practicing right now for the grand Final.
October 2, 2012 3:48 pm
Pakistan has been fortunate with pace bowlers. Even a few have been disqualified, Pakistan manages to be bestowed with pace. It is a matter of confidence and excellence. However, better traditions in batting need to be set.
October 3, 2012 7:18 am
Very sensible and I honor you for that.........
October 2, 2012 10:15 pm
Aussies are a true professional by nature and to suggest they approached match against Pakistan in a negative manner is not right or fair on them. India deserved to go further but sadly some you win and some you loose. Hafeez is not performing either as a captain or batsman, will selector be bold and wise enough to drop him in the semi against SL.

I dont understand what has Hafeez got against Razzaq. He is never asked to bowl. He is never selected in the side, even though he performs well. He was never asked to bowl against Australia in UAE except for the crunch last over, and the match went into the superover. Hafeez please think like a man of action- act like a man of thought. Atleast this is how India's MS Dhoni does.
October 2, 2012 5:35 pm
Dude? whats your problem ? English is none of Pakistani languages and Pakistanis shouldn't be bothered if they make mistakes, grammatical, spelling whatever. You want to be proud of your English language skills, be my guest but don't ram it down others' throats.
October 2, 2012 10:22 pm
I am sorry to say Hafeez is not the right choice to lead Pakistan in Twenty20 format.
October 3, 2012 4:19 pm
We will do it soon(inshah-allah)
October 3, 2012 4:18 pm
Pakistan did qualify on merit, India already knew what exactly they need to achieve to go through and hit the 'merit', but they failed. India had a clear advantage there. Pakistan almost kicked Australia out of first spot in group, just missed it.

Dude, Pakistan has beaten Australia more miserably last month in Dubai in T20, get over it now. Pak vs. Aus and Ind vs. SA were actually between India and Pakistan, it's just that their opponents were different and both India and Pakistan were running for the race of Semis, Pakistan has won this race. In your face!

October 3, 2012 5:55 am
Pakistan will beat Australia anyday but to beat them by 32 runs means that Australia is a baby team. Sri Lanka will now easily win the WC, they are the best team in the 4 teams which made it to the semi finals.
October 3, 2012 5:54 am
Once the Ausie openers failed, I knew the game was over for them. Pakistani spinners were superb. I hope they go and win the cup, then we Indians can say that we are the only ones who can beat the champs.

October 3, 2012 5:45 am
You made a remarkable point. But the credit you awarded to India for 'allowing Pakistan' to play in Indian Premiere League(IPL) is completely unwarranted. The IPL is NOT India's domestic cricket, but rather an international event, licensed by International Cricket Council for international participation. It is very unfortunate of India that still mirred in a culture of outcasting others as untouchables.

just imagine the comments of Indian skeeper, he didn't had the guts to praise Pakistani team for getting into semis by sheer hard work and not only by luck. all three teams won two matches each but it was some thing else which mattered, that might have come through brain? Indian must not forget that when play was stopped due to rain in Aus/india clash, what was the SCORE? I was hoping that Australian will complete their win with in 14/15 overs. So rain infact saved indian from getting into......Getting into semies is not a NEW for great PAKISTAN. TUM JEET KER BHI HARAIE HUM HAR KER BHI JEETAE... TAKE CARE, no doubt you also played good game and won by only one run from South Africa, BUT IT IS WHO PLAYED BETTER IN THE END...............

Pakistan won the match against Australia coz Australia never wanted to face Sri Lanka....everyone could see how Australians were playing...they simply were not trying at all...So while Pakistanis can jump as much as they want, the fact remains that India defeated Pak badly.
October 3, 2012 1:49 am
Agreed, for semi final work out a winning game plan. Add one more specialist batsman to add runs to the total for lankans to chase. Saeed Ajmal Hafeez and Raza good enough for spin attack and 2 seamers with razzak to fill any required overs can ably take the resposibilty. Magic word is, one more batsman to score runs to chase. Wishing our players best of luck

Told ya. I can guarantee a win against Australia, but can'y say anything about the others. I am still at a loss, why India lost to the minnows of the super eight?
October 3, 2012 1:19 am
Pakistan will meet Sri Lanka on Thursday in semi final. Australia will meet Windies on Friday in semis. India will meet South Africa tonight at the airport.:) Happy Landings.
October 2, 2012 5:34 pm
The Ajmal , Raza pair did it. Left and right spin combination is deadly. Watch out SL this can spin you out also. Congrats Raza for the MoM. Ajmal /Raza = Waqar/Wasim

Dawn: Please remove this personal attack by observer. Bad manners.
October 3, 2012 12:45 am
I don't think they planned to lose.
October 3, 2012 12:43 am
Pakistan team will always be welcome to India not only for champions league. People enjoy their performance. IPL -1 must be remembered if anyone misses out. Akram is bowling coach of KKR. As common man we do not know the security issues and other issues. Hope things get back to Normal.
October 2, 2012 6:52 pm
well said:) also drop Shoib and he is no good for pak team....has not done anything for team in recent days...
October 2, 2012 8:05 pm
nasir jamshed needs to open instead of imran nazir(who should be dropped),bring asad shafique in the middle order and make gul bowl yorkers for three overs from the 16th onwards

Reading Indian comments shows so much propaganda, so many lies.
October 2, 2012 8:04 pm
India knew the results of Pak Vs Australia and knew exactly what they have to do to advance even after losing toss they needed a clear target of 31 run victory. They could not get it done. They are great team nonetheless but let us not blame Australia for any conspiracy. The wicket was favoring spinners and let us leave at that.
October 3, 2012 12:35 am
I am Indian fan too. Your comment is not in the right spirit. Australia losing on purpose can never happen. Pakistan did what they are good at. Spin and Spin after putting a good score on board. Winning against Aussies is never easy. It is a fact now that Pakistan have an edge against Aussies. If only Pakistan fielders can support their bowlers ALL THE TIME, they will be winning more trophies. Pakistan has natural talent in cricket and hockey and so they are able to reach at least the semis more consistently. So give credit where due.
October 3, 2012 12:29 am
That is a ridiculous comment. Australia will never ever be afraid of any team. If it is a Aus vs Pak final, then they will have a plan. Such is the preparation of Aussies. That will be another day and so if Pak reaches final, they still need to work hard if they face Aussies.
October 3, 2012 12:08 am
Desi power! Thankyou for that.

Now that India is out of the tournament, I, along with all Indians, am now a whole-hearted Pakistan supporter. Pakistan is the best team there and should win this time -- they just need to have faith and confidence in themselves.
October 2, 2012 11:35 pm
Language is merely a means of communication, nothing more than that . An educated human being is recognized by his humble behaviour and mannerism, and you have certainly exhibited in unequivocal terms. Good luck to you Mr.Educated Observer in your all future endeavours.

I dont know why you indians are not able to understand this.. Aus had 2 targets.. one to keep their place in Semis and 2nd to win the game.. when they lost early wickets they went for their first target.. India or any other team would've done the same thing.. if you think Aus fear india.. then go and see the result for India vs Aus game in super 8. Had india done a good show in that game this situation wouldn't have come..

I do feel sorry for Indian fans because their team missed to qualify for semi finals. I am very proud of Pakistani team for the great job they have done today. Indians should accept the defeat gracefully and go home without blaming Australia. India has a great team and they are capable of beating any team in the world. But so are few other teams including Pakistan. India has to accept the reality. If they have any proof that Australia lost on purpose, then they should present it to ICC and let them decide the future of Australian team.
October 2, 2012 6:33 pm
there's nothing to reply at mate.. dissappointed we are, however i am sure you would have felt better if pakistan could have qualified on his own merit and didn't had to wait for the india-Sa match.. :) btw i am not being sarcastic here ;)

Great. Thanks a lot. Felt sad over India being out.
October 2, 2012 7:10 pm
Though I am disappointed India didn't make it to the next around, I have to say 4 most deserving teams did. Pakistan certainly deserved to go to the next round after their performance against Australia. And all the talk about Australia losing deliberately sounds like garbage to me. Pakistan has a great bowling attack and they showed it today.
October 2, 2012 6:40 pm
india played badly against australia and hence we are out... however i saw australia playing today against pakistan and i reckon they could have scored 10-15 runs more once they reached their desired target to qualify.. the 1s and 2s were suprising.. meanwhile, i guess pakistan supporters would have liked had their team would have qualified on its own merit and were not dependant on india-sa game outcome... ;)

Dont be a loser !!! and grow up Aussies aint afraid of india at all.
October 2, 2012 9:14 pm
See how hafeez smarts. We trapped Indian.
October 2, 2012 6:13 pm
Hafeez did a great job today. Pinning down Australia in a do or die game after a defeat was no simple task. Afridi most probably will retire after this tournament. He has done his job for his country and given us enough pride to put Boom Boom on our t-shirts and bats and the nation calls him Lala :-) That will live on forever.
October 2, 2012 7:06 pm
"Jittery Pakistan handed big loss by India" -dawn on this page top left hand side. India still beat Pakistan. i think Pakistanis quite quickly forget what they read yesterday:-) good luck in T20 semis

Bro India or any country we should respect each other if pakistan lost it then they will put us bad so learn from bad to good. Everyone has bad day or good day. It is a learning experience. To all indian fans india played good. Well done. At least they allowed pakistan to come to india and start playing cricket game if I am not mistaken for the championship league. Always remember who is with you when bad times. Kisi ki har par hasna nahin chahiya because three fingers will be pointing at you.
October 2, 2012 10:56 pm
I agree with you. But one has to do something to push your luck into action. Don't you think so ? Just sitting around and doing nothing, even luck would abandon you.

lol... that was clearly joke of the day... you seem to be carried away mate ;)
October 2, 2012 10:52 pm
Afridi, Sohaib Malik and Umar Gul should be out and Razzak, Asad Shafiq and good fast bowler should get In if Pakistan has to win the matches. Luck will not work always it work only some time. Its a reminder to selection Commitee & Team management that they should select the players purely on merit, if Pakistan has to be on top in cricket otherwise select your own relatives & have a fun infront of the whole world.

I think PCB management through coaches seriously considered what they should do to improve the mentality because if india had qualified then captain and the managment should be blamed they knew that afridi times is gone razzak should play more games and it proved it again today. They should have difference aside and always put pakistan first then their own idea. Time to bring more young blood because they need good opening combination. I am ok with bowling but batting seems to be lacking again and again. Everyone has opinion so nothing again anyone I am not the managment to criticize otherwise it would be a different story. Inshallah I hope that pak do well from no on until they bring the cup to Pakistan where millions of fan want to see some hope what they are facing internally and externally. Make us proud long live pakistan. Quaid-e-Azam zindabad.

Send Afridi home.. What a pathetic performance by him in the series so far. He may have been great but so was the Mughalia badshahat. Look what happened.

I am an indian, I support pakistan to win the cup.. there will be something to celebrate for your country which has gone thru so much. If it can’t be india, its got to get to ex-indians. !!Go pakistan Go!!

lame excuses after shameful defeat by Australia
October 2, 2012 6:07 pm
Its just a luck, pak is in semi final not because of Hafeez
October 2, 2012 9:45 pm
Congratultions Pakistan and all the best in Semis, but the Heading says it all :"Pakistan qualify for semis on net run rate". Since there is little else to be proud of, do celebrate a semis slot on 'run rate'.

i think afridi should be rested. he has consistently failed with bat and ball and has outlived his utility for the team. he is a great player and it is now time for him to retire gracefully.
October 2, 2012 3:52 pm
Hafeez is supposed to be the Captain of the team. He is responsible for decisions he makes in the field. He is not a clairvoyant. It is easy to criticize after the fact. Put yourself in his position for a while (in your mind only, please) and see what he (or any Captain) does is taking the best chance. Having said that, please keep in mind that all Captains make minor mistakes all the time and blunders once in a blue moon.
October 2, 2012 5:08 pm
well done Raza
