Food stuff, fertiliser seized

KOHAT, Sept 30: An attempt to smuggle food stuff and fertiliser from Punjab through Kohat to Afghanistan was foiled on Sunday. The cantonment police stopped a truck (IR-1707) on the Parachinar road and on checking found that the driver did not possess valid permit for taking consignment to Afghanistan. The police seized 500 bags of sugar, 50 bags of rice and 100 bags of urea being taken to Afghanistan. The police arrested the driver Charagh Din, resident of Dhodha Sharif, Kohat and impounded the vehicle.

In another incident, the Jungle Khel police seized raw material used in making of weapons which was smuggled from Punjab to Darra Adam Khel on Sunday.

The police seized 299 bolts of rifles, 185 iron casings of pistols and 15 tonnes of iron belt. The smugglers Sohail and Naveed Arif were arrested and a FIR was lodged against them. The truck (PRZ-25765) was also impounded.—Correspondent

Residents vent ire at TMA

KARAK, Sept 30: The residents of Karak city have complained about the poor performance of tehsil municipal administration.

They said the TMA had failed to keep the city cleaned, repair the streetlights and overcome shortage of drinking water.

The residents, in a press conference on Sunday, said the drainage system of the city was extremely poor and the drains remained choked, causing inconvenience to people. They complained due to chocked nullahs rainwater entered houses and caused damage to properties. They said the city streets remained littered with garbage but the TMA staff never bothered to remove the garbage.

Meanwhile, former tehsil nazim Karak and JUI-F leader Abdur Rehman Khattak has demanded reconstruction of Karak-Surdag road which has become a nuisance for people.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, he said the road had been repaired some time ago but now it was in a very bad shape.

He said the road was main link between Karak and Bannu districts.—Correspondent

Liquor seized

LANDI KOTAL, Sept 30: The Khasadar force in Jamrud recovered 214 bottles of liquor during a raid in Wazir Dhand market and arrested nine alleged drug dealers.

The khasadars also impounded four motorcycles supposedly used in the smuggling and supply of liquor.

Later, the khasadar force demolished the houses of two alleged car lifters in the same area.—Correspondent

Elders pledge support to govt

KHAR, Sept 30: Elders of Bajaur Agency on Sunday extended support to the security forces in preventing militant attacks in border areas.

This was announced during a jirga held here. Elders of different tribes, leaders and members of various peace committees and Qaumi laskhars participated in the jirga.

Political agent Syed Abdul Jabar Shah and senior officials of administration were also present. Elders of Tharkani and Utmankhel tribes assured the administration of full support in maintaining writ of the government in their respective areas. “We are committed to protecting our land from any aggression of the enemies of the tribesmen and no one would be allowed to disrupt peace in the border regions,” they added. The elders demanded of the Afghanistan government to immediately stop the militants living in the Kunar province from intruding into the Bajaur tribal region.—Correspondent

Developing sports facilities

PESHAWAR, Sept 30: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has said he has issued directives to the heads of educational institutions to develop sufficient sports facilities at the campuses, promote sports and encourage students to participate actively in the games.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the concluding ceremony of the 45th Khyber Pakhtunkhwa National Ranking Amateur Golf Championship at the PAF Golf Course here on Sunday. “This is my loud and clear message to the educational institutions especially the authorities of the universities both in the public and private sectors to promote sports and ensure better sports facilities available to students,” he said. He announced a grant of Rs0.5 million for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Golf Association.

The governor appreciated the presence of a good number of females as well as under-15 and under-9 children among the winners. —Bureau Report
