COLOMBO: Pakistan will look to extend their dominant form and put India on the brink of elimination when the old foes clash in the World Twenty20 on Sunday.

Pakistan have never beaten India in either the 50-over World Cup or the World Twenty20, but Mohammad Hafeez’s men start as favourites in the much-awaited Super Eights game in Colombo.

Pakistan are the team in form, winning both matches in the preliminary league before stunning top-ranked South Africa by two wickets in their first Super Eights game on Friday.

In contrast, Australia annihilated India by nine wickets later the same evening, leaving Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men needing to beat Pakistan and South Africa to stay in contention for the semi-finals.

But if Australia beat South Africa and Pakistan defeat India in Sunday’s double-header, both winners will advance to the semi-finals from what was billed as the “group of death”.

Pakistan seamer Umar Gul, an unlikely hero with the bat against South Africa with a power-packed 32 off 17 balls, said: “When we play India there is lot of pressure because our people always want us to win.

“The same is the case in India, so there will be pressure on both teams.

“Anything can happen. We will give it our best shot. India is a very good team, but we know each other’s strong and weak points. In T20 it all depends on how a team plays on that day.”

India, winners of the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007, failed to win even one Super Eights game in the next two editions, in England in 2009 and the Caribbean in 2010.

Skipper Dhoni, however, put a positive spin on his team’s do-or-die scenario ahead of the sold-out game at the 35,000-capacity Premadasa Stadium.

“It is always good to be in a situation where you have to win every game,” he said.

“There is no scope for complacency and that is a good thing. You have to be at your best throughout.

“Hopefully we can go out and express ourselves without worrying too much about the result.”

India and Pakistan have played just two official Twenty20 internationals against each other, both during the 2007 tournament.

The league match in Durban ended in a tie before India won the bowl-out.

The two sides met again in the final in Johannesburg, which India won by five runs in the final over.

Before the current showpiece started, Pakistan defeated India by five wickets in a practice match in Colombo on September 17, with Kamran Akmal smashing an unbeaten 92 off 50 balls.

Pakistan, chasing India’s commanding 185-3, slipped to 91-5 before Akmal and former captain Shoaib Malik turned the game around with a brilliant unbroken stand of 95 off 46 balls.

Akmal plundered six sixes, including the winning shot off seamer Irfan Pathan which sailed over the cover fence. Malik remained unbeaten on 37 off 18 balls.

Cricket ties between the neighbours, suspended after the Mumbai attacks in 2008, are set to resume in December when Pakistan tour India for three one-dayers and two Twenty20 games.

How has Pakistan been always a better team in any format of game !!! If so why you loose in every WC ? IEven the last time India toured Pakistan, India defeated you. You suffer from delusions. India will thrash your team. Wait and watch.

Pakistan batting line needs a discipline. They should know, if chasing a target, what is required per over and then bat accordingly. While chasing a small total of 133 against South Africa, there was no need to start the innings with 4s & 6s. Single on each ball would have suffice couples with on-ground attempts for 4s. Coach, manager and other seniors of the team should plan such tactics.

I am a Pakistani cricket fan.Naturally I would want Paksitan to win.But I do think India are strong and have the upper hand.Pakistan have played and fought well but they have to play better and fight much harder. And please play hard and well to avoid elemination yourself dear Pakistan team and not to play to eliminate India. Good Luck to both teams.

I think Pakistan is favourite for Sunday cricket match between Pakistan and India as Pakistan beaten South Africa in their first match of super 8 round and India lost their match against Australia.

A useless team like India even playing in T20 is big joke...Pakistan would be very happy facing idiots.

Now the match is over and India won it with authority. I repeat that this current Indian team is better, and unless you have someone doing something extraordinary for Pakistan, India will outplay Pakistan. Now let us put this behind us, and focus on upcoming matches.

India beaten by Australia, one of the weaklings of the tournament. That's why all the Indian commentators have stopped commenting on Dawn website. Anyone still reading?

September 29, 2012 8:05 pm
who cares anyways!! this is the most boring world cup ever. Hardly anyone is interested. Stadiums are half full and no one is discussing the games in the office. ICC should plan out world cup schedules better. We had one last year and another one just months back (under 19). Both of which were won by India and hence there is hardly any appetite or motivation in Indians for this cup (going by their body language).
October 1, 2012 5:44 am
India has given a befitting reply to this 'corrosive' caption from DAWN. Pakistan can never 'plan' any victory. Defeat comes naturally.
September 29, 2012 6:32 pm
Indian batting is good but you don't need all 11 players to bat in T20. And then Indian bowling is pathetic. I know some people will stereotype and say Indian diet etc, but I don't think that, because if that were the reason then India wouldn't win 3 out of 6 Olympics medals in events like boxing-wrestling. Other than fast bowlers, even Indian spinners are average these days. It goes back to batting culture in India (as if who would want to make bowling effort over dead pitches in India). I remember in my childhood, everyone wanted to bat no one wanted to bowl. I think current Pakistani team is very good, last time I remember so good at the time of Wasim Akram only. I am not sure of Test-ODI yet, that needs to more time prove, still its current form makes it one of the the best T20 team on subcontinent grounds or probably worldwide.
September 30, 2012 5:17 am
This match will decide India's captaincy..or even maybe Dhoni's career in T20, ironic that his rise started from the T20 wc in 2007
September 29, 2012 2:25 pm
keep plotting..this is all what you can do ..LOL
September 29, 2012 2:27 pm
India will defeat Pakistan. Pakistan needs lots of luck and they had their quota against SA. Both their frontline batsmen, and bowlers are not doing well. It is the part timers like Umar Gul who are saving them, that too against teams like SA which always choke. Ajmal is excellent, but, spinners never intimidate Indian batsmen.
September 30, 2012 9:49 pm
The article is sold by the news agency 'Agence France-Presse' (AFP), which is one of the world's oldest & biggest news agency. A news agency is an organization of journalists established to supply news reports to news media around the globe. So, both TOI & Dawn news bought the article from the same source. And this is the reason you will find the same wording in most of the newspapers around the globe - while covering the same event.

India should include Sehwag in place useless Zaheer. With the kind of Medium pacers we have India can not afford 2 seamers. India should play with 3 spinners and 2 all rounders pathan and Yuvraj. Pak had had series of one Match wonders like Imran Nazir, Yasir Hameed, mohammed Hafeez, Imran Farhat, khurram mazoor, Faisal Iqbal,Fawad Alam, Azhar Ali etc. On their day they are better than even Tendulkar but sadly their day comes only once or twice a year. pakistan rely heavily on these one match wonders but sadly they do not deliver most of the times.
September 29, 2012 3:20 pm
Did someone call Gul a part timer ? Really you dont know much about your cricket. He is not only regarded as one of the best bowlers of the format, but also has the most wickets by a "front line" pacer. Which reminds me please explain, how has your excuse of a "pace" contingent performed until now ? And will we see all the playin xi plus the coaching staff bowling tomorrow ?

Pakistan will suffer it's heaviest defeat of T-20s this Sunday. We Indian have thrashed Pak like bulies in every encounter of World cup and this match will be no different. Shahid Afridi will play a very crucial role in Pak's defeat. mark my words.

Wish both teams good luck. I think India will win tomorrow because Dhoni's men are going to come with all guns blazing. They have no other option but to go for win. Pakistan will run for cover!!

Good Luck, it can so happen that the Pakistan gets reversed plotted..
September 29, 2012 11:44 am
Pakistani team has been always better then Indian team in any foramt of game...Similalry, Pakistani has been better in then Inda's in all world cups as well....but what important is the end result...we loose to them in any WC..., we need to be mentally strong and without external lpressures also!.... so the bottomline is no talking and no boiling the issue like we will through India out of tournament etc.and uselss statistics esp. by media.....keep your heads down...voice low....get us a positive result....and stay focused....

I am really astonished to see the same wording of this news in Times of India, either Dawn or TOI is doing the copy paste.................
September 29, 2012 10:58 am
I am surprised to see the heading.. They don't want to win against india but to eliminate india from WT20. However if india looses things are one or same but true sportsman want to see good match not to express personal desire to the extreme. Don't show enmity on sports.
September 29, 2012 10:49 am
History will repeat itself again..Pakistan Can't beat India in ICC tournaments. Best of luck anyway.

September 30, 2012 1:30 am
Pakistan would beat India based on current form. India is still not gelling as a team unit. Dhoni's captaincy also has not been his usual inspirational. India need to bring in Unmukt Chand and Baba Aparjith directly to the India T20 and ODI Squad. Both of them are awesome players. Also please bring in Sandeep Sharma from the U19 Squad into the T20 Squad. Retire Virender Sehwag, Gambhir, Balaji from the T20 Squad. Thanks Chennai Super Kings rock! Good Luck to both teams.I wish that India gets through, cause then we can watch another India-Pakistan Finals :-) Enjoy everyone and be chilled.

Pakistan is going to loose merely due to the "cricket diplomacy" and huge betting industry. Case in point - game at Mohali in the World Cup, Misbah was the victor of orchestrated loss.

September 29, 2012 7:50 pm
If you know cricket, you will know what I mean by luck. Umar Gul played best knock of his life thats why it was termed as an unlikely win. Your frontline batsmen are not scoring quick fifties and your pacers are not intimidating, and nothing outstanding about fielding as well. Victories are not clean and convincing, they just seem to be happening. Thats what I call luck in Sri Lanka that helped you reach semis in the last world cup.
Shajia Ahmed

What a pathetic title for an article. You plan to win a match, and not plot someones elimination. That said, let's hope for a good competitive match and may the best team win
Basharat Rasool
September 30, 2012 6:17 am
Mr. Shrish! time will tell Umar Gul is part timer or front line fast bowler. Your team afraid to defend the score of 140 against Australia because they have the good bowling options. Also one more suggestion, Indian captain always want his batsmen to score 200+ plus runs in T20 as he knows that his bowlers can't able to defend the score around 150 to 170 runs, which is not possible in every match.
