Replying to an address of welcome presented to him at a civic reception, Mr Suhrawardy deplored the “mischievous propaganda” in certain quarters that the people of Eastern Wing were not loyal to national interest, and were engaged in secessionist activities.

He said the heroic struggle made by the people of East Pakistan for the establish-ment of this country and for its survival were simply unforgettable and were a living proof of their patriotism and sincere faith in its destiny. —Lahore Correspondent

‘Cobalt bomb’ unit in Jinnah Hospital KARACHI: A new era in the treatment of cancer in Pakistan has been ushered in with the installation of a cobalt beam therapy unit at the Cancer Institute, in the Jinnah Central Hospital, Karachi. The unit was inaugurated on Tuesday afternoon by Mr. C.C. Eberts, High Commissioner for Canada.

The cobalt beam therapy unit has been supplied by the Government of Canada under the Columbo Plan. The equipment costing 75,000 dollars is of the latest type. The Government of Canada has also provided facilities for training a radio-therapist and a physicist of the Cancer Institute.

The Cancer Institute was established in 1954 and was equipped with conventional deep x-ray therapy, superficial x-ray therapy and contact therapy and radium. In 1960, a medical radio-isotope centre was set up with the help of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.

The cobalt beam therapy equipment, popularly known as “cobalt bomb”, is a modern device for the treatment of cancer. It has enabled the Institute to treat cancer quickly and effectively.

This has also resulted in a considerable saving of foreign exchange as the unit has obviated the necessity of sending patients abroad. —Agencies
