ROME: Italian energy major ENI said on Wednesday it had discovered a major reserve of between 300 billion and 400 billion cubic feet of gas some 350 kilometres north of Karachi in Pakistan.

The discovery was made in the Khirtar Fold Belt region close to the ENI-operated Bhit gas processing facility, the company said in a statement.

ENI said it “confirms the presence of significant exploration potential that can be exploited through the application of new geological models.”

The company said it had begun talks with Pakistani authorities on creating a joint venture, adding that it would “help to reduce the national gas deficit.”

ENI has been in Pakistan since 2000 and is the country’s largest producer, with average production of 54,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2011.

Pakistan has had an endemic energy crisis for years, characterised by frequent blackouts, which has crippled the economy.

The crisis is blamed on chronic mismanagement and corruption.

Unless we completely root out regime of corruption and debilitating social injustice conditions, in Pakistan, these kind of discoveries would not improve the conditions of common people.

In dealing with the resource sector, the media should be very careful to use proper terminology while describing the "discovery" of "major rerserve". Please note that in the resource sector the word "resource" has a specific meaning and is not the same as "reserve". Please note that ENI has issued a very measured statement which “confirms the presence of significant exploration potential that can be exploited through the application of new geological models.” In simple english this means that the results of the present exploration have been promising and that significant further exploration is required and that the resource could be exploited through new technology. So hang on to your hat. We are not Qatar, just yet.

Its about time Pakistan ramped up its gas production at par with atleast Bangladesh. Unforntunately, there has been no major discovery since Sui gas fields in Baluchistan. Pakistan also needs to resolve the Sir Creek issue with India so exploration can begin there.

I hope this is real and not like a long time ago when we heard a little before elections that country had become self sufficient in the exploration of oil and Pakistan also was manufacturing small airplanes. Sounds familiar in the current atmosphere. What about our own drone system?
