Bank deposits increase

IN the week ended August 31, 2012, deposits and other accounts of all scheduled banks increased and stood at Rs6276.121 billion, higher by Rs69.229 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs6206.892 billion.

Compared with last year’s corresponding figure of Rs5364.701 billion, the current week’s figure is larger by Rs911.42 billion.

During the current week, commercial banks deposits showed a rise of Rs69.079 billion over the week to Rs6261.759 billion, against preceding week’s Rs6192.680 billion. Specialised banks deposits stood at Rs14.362 billion, against previous week’s Rs14.212 billion.

According to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ended August 31, 2012, borrowings by all scheduled banks declined in the week. It fell to Rs748.055 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs794.243 billion, or by Rs46.188 billion.

Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs632.369 billion, current week’s figure is higher by Rs115.686 billion.

Commercial banks borrowings decreased to Rs671.730 billion against previous week’s Rs718.015 billion, or by Rs46.285 billion. Borrowings by specialized banks stood at Rs76.324 billion, against preceding weeks Rs76.228 billion.

Other liabilities of all scheduled banks stood at Rs328.876 billion, against preceding week’s Rs310.505 billion, showing an increase of Rs18.371 billion. Compared with last year’s corresponding figure of Rs287.593 billion, the current week’s figure is higher by Rs41.283 billion.

Gross advances stood at Rs3713.955 billion in the week under review, an increase of Rs11.324 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs3702.631 billion. Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs3411.810 billion, current week’s figure is higher by Rs302.145 billion.

In the week under review, advances by commercial banks rose to Rs3595.246 billion against earlier week’s figure of Rs3584.005 billion, or by Rs11.241 billion. Advances of specialised banks stood at Rs118.709 billion.

Investments of all scheduled banks stood at Rs3389.697 billion, against preceding week’s figure of Rs3371.061 billion, an increase of Rs18.636 billion. Compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs2657.339 billion, current week’s figure is larger by Rs732.358 billion. In the current week, commercial banks investment stood at Rs3363.470 billion, against preceding week’s figure of Rs3344.932 billion, an increase of Rs18.538 billion. Specialised banks investment stood at Rs26.227 billion.

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks decreased by Rs18.331 billion during the week to stand at Rs563.115 billion against earlier week’s Rs581.446 billion. Current week’s figure is higher by Rs88.628 billion compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs474.487 billion. In the current week, the figure for commercial banks stood at Rs560.531 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs578.740 billion, a fall of Rs18.209 billion, while of specialised banks it stood at Rs2.584 billion, against preceding week’s Rs2.706 billion.

Balances with other banks decreased to Rs139.489 billion against Rs148.270 billion in the previous week, or by Rs8.781 billion.

It was higher by Rs20.742 billion against Rs118.747 billion in the corresponding week last year. Balances of all commercial banks stood at Rs135.535 billion, a decline of Rs8.693 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs144.228 billion. Balances of specialised banks stood at Rs3.953 billion.

Total assets of scheduled banks stood at Rs8362.237 billion, higher by Rs24.101 billion, over preceding week’s figure of Rs8338.136 billion. Current week’s figure was higher by Rs1204.4 billion compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs7157.837 billion. In the current week, commercial banks assets stood at Rs8211.504 billion, higher by Rs24.098 billion over previous week’s figure of Rs8187.406 billion, while of specialised banks it stood at Rs150.733 billion.

Net assets of all scheduled banks stood at Rs854.011 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs866.211 billion, showing a fall of Rs12.2 billion. Current week’s figure was higher by Rs114.985 billion compared to last year’s corresponding figure of Rs739.026 billion. The figure for commercial banks stood at Rs842.622 billion, smaller by Rs11.144 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs853.766 billion.

Specialised bank’s net assets stood at Rs11.389 billion, against previous week’s 12.445 billion.
