KARACHI, Sept 10: A man said to be a senior worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was shot dead in Orangi Town on Monday, police said.

They said that the killing took place in Orangi Town’s Sector 11 within the remit of the Iqbal Market police station.

Four armed men riding two motorbikes intercepted Kaleemullah Kaleem, 50, when he came out of a mosque after offering Asr prayers near Dabba Mor, fired shots at him and rode away.

The victim sustained multiple bullet wounds and was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police said that the assailants used 9mm pistol in the shooting as several spent bullet casings had been recovered from the scene of crime.

They said that the victim, father of four, was a former in charge of Unit No 118-A of the MQM’s organisational structure. He was presently employed at the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and was also an office-bearer of the MQM’s labour division.

Following the killing, tension gripped the locality as shops and markets were closed in different parts of Orangi Town. There were also reports of intermittent firing from several parts of the densely populated neighbourhood.

A large number of party activists gathered at the hospital after learning about the killing.

Man, nephew killed in Baldia Town

The owner of a bus terminal and his nephew were shot dead in Baldia Town on Monday.

Police said that the killings took place in Gulshan-i-Ghazi at the terminal of route G-7 minibuses within the remit of the Mochko police station.

They said that armed men riding a motorcycle targeted Khan Pasand Khan, 58, and his nephew Rais Khan, 30, when they were sitting at the terminal.

The suspects managed to escape from the scene after carrying out the shooting, the police said.

The wounded died on their way to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Mochko SHO Imtiaz Jat said that Khan Pasand Khan was the owner of the terminal while his nephew was the accounts-keeper there.

“Two days back Khan had submitted an application at the police station against some of his relatives saying that they have given him death threats,” the area SHO said.

The police suspected that the incident was a result of some personal enmity.

They said that the victims had been called at the terminal by someone from their home. Khan suffered eight bullet wounds while Rais sustained three bullet wounds.

The owner was a resident of Rasheedabad while his nephew Rais lived in Ghaziabad. They originally hailed from Swat, the police said.

Couple shot dead

A couple was killed in their house in Madina Colony within the remit of the Shah Latif police station on Monday, police said They said that gunmen barged into the house and opened fire on the couple. As a result of the firing, Riyat Khan and his wife Parveen suffered multiple bullet wounds and died before they could be taken to hospital.

The police said that the couple had left their house following rains and on Monday they returned to the house to clean it up.

The couple had a dispute with some family members over the house and it appeared that they were killed over the dispute, the police added.

Canteen contractor shot dead

A young man was shot dead in Orangi Town’s Sector 11-E within the remit of the Mominabad police station on Monday.

Police said that gunmen targeted Mohtisham Ahmed, 30, near the government girls’ college and fled. The victim was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Inspector Sajid of the Mominabad police station said that the victim was a resident of Surjani Town and was killed over a monetary dispute.

He said that the victim’s brother Ethasham lodged an FIR (330/2012) against three suspects for killing his brother at the Mominabad police station.

The police said that the victim was the contractor of a school canteen.

Wounded policeman dies

A policeman who was shot at late on Sunday night near Hasan Square died from bullet wounds on Monday.

Police said that Constable Ajaz Shah, was posted at the security zone Hasan Square, was heading home after his duty when he was shot at by assailants.

He was admitted to a private hospital where he died on Monday.
