RAWALPINDI, Aug 22: Driving on dilapidated Chaudhry Bostan Khan Road has become a nightmare for the motorists. The road, leading to Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench from Chaklala Scheme-III, is full of potholes for the past seven months. It connects Scheme-III and Saddar area with Bahria Town, Media Town and Gulraiz Housing Scheme and has big shopping markets stretching over five kilometer area.

The broken road has become bumpy and accident-prone and the Chaklala Cantonment Board (CCB) has failed to repair the road and to make it traffic worthy.

Those plying their two or four wheelers on this road are the worst hit. They find it difficult to pass it hassle free as at certain points they have to face worst traffic jams. Even the public transporters face difficulties in keeping their wheels moving on this road and taxi drivers refused the commuters to go there because of the condition of the road.

Some of the patches of the road also cause hazards to pedestrians as during the rains it develops puddles.

The area also falls under the constituency of NA-52 of PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif’s Son-in-law Muhammad Safdar, but he has done nothing for the improvement of area.

Besides this, the area also faces acute water shortage and people get water after paying Rs1,000 to Rs1,200 to private tankers.

Although MNA Capt (retired) Mohammad Safdar managed to get Rs100 million from the provincial government during last fiscal 2011-12, the uplift work is not visible in this part of his constituency.

The residents of the adjoining areas like Yousaf Colony, Khayban-e-Tanveer, Gulraiz Colony, Gharibabad, Dhoke Chaudhrian, Khan Colony, Banaras Colony and others are annoyed by the civic body as well as local MNA and MPA as they have failed to provide them basic amenities.

After election the area representative does not turn up to his constituency, but only comes before the general elections, they said adding on the other hand the cantonment authorities collect all taxes from them but in return give them nothing.

Nisar Malik, a resident of Yousaf Colony, said the potholes on the road take a heavy toll played on his car’s engine, shocks and tyres, and it was difficult for middle class people to spend hefty amount on repair of car for no fault of theirs.

Mohammad Najam, a resident of Banaras Colony, said that they face numerous problems due to bad condition of the road.Naseem Ahmed, a resident of Safari Villas, put the blame on CCB for not repairing the road and said that the clouds of dust arising from the damaged road plays havoc with the allergy patients.

He said that due to the lethargic attitude of the government, the road had not been repaired for a long. He said that there was many potholes on the road which slowed down vehicular movement.

When contacted the Chaklala Cantonment Board, no senior official was available to comment as the Cantonment Executive Officer and Cantonment Engineer Riaz Sheikh had gone to their hometowns to celebrate Eid.
