President Asif Ali Zardari arrives at the Dargah of Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti (RA). - APP Photo
NEW DELHI: Pakistan's High Commissioner Salman Bashir, on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari, the Government and people of Pakistan, on Friday presented a cheque of one million dollars as donation for ‘Dargah’ Ajmer Sharif.
The donation was announced by President Zardari during his visit to Dargah Khawaja Moinuddin Chishty at Ajmer in April this year.
The donation will be utilized for the development and welfare projects, upkeep and maintenance of the shrine and provision of services for the pilgrims by duly established committees and ‘Anjumans’
Besides members of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, the collector Ajmer and senior officials of Ajmer Administration attended the presentation ceremony.

I have read and have a lot to say, to save time of all just consider; traffic comes to halt for dead man (Janaza) but if a living person steps on the road ... so it is our culture, probably, to respect dead and let die the living ! Lastly, I tell you we will actually elect him if he presents himself in coming elections. So think and decide what should be done, instaed of commenting & talking.

Had the President not given the money to the dargah, where would it have been used? Would it have been used for hospitals, feeding the poor and the needy? Your guess is as good as mine. There is a silver line to the dark cloud. Maybe Ajmer Sharif does something to the President and his thought and he suddenly decides to turn to do things that all the commentators want him to do. Well that is a miracle, isnt it? The Ajmer Sharif is famous for that. Mysterious are the ways of God.

Charity begins at home. Charity is out of your own hard earned money. You cant offer 'fateha for a grand mother' standing in-front of a sweet mart raising your hands free for nothing. Then how about the limit if any on transfer of foreign exchange in violation of the State Bank Rules? You don't have the immunity of a president to transfer public money even if the cause is sacred. The president, the FM, the governor SBP and the high commissioner are liable to be prosecuted for this transaction. But who cares in a law of jungle?

No govt should give taxpayer money to a religious institution, domestic or foreign. Although it can be viewed as a payment for improving Indo-Pak relations which is a (non-religious) benefit to all.

If you don't vote, don't be surprised if the next PM or President gives $2 million to a hospital in India.

Mr Zardary is acting like a king,if he believes in democracy, he should have asked the parliament or the people to authorise this huge donation. To me it looks like a sadqa for him and his childrens, who are groomed to rule the country after him.Does he care about the sick, hungry, uneducated, suffering from lack of health facilities, education, clean drinking water.I can only say shame for this bad decision.

Zardari visited Ajmer to fulfill the Mannat of his late wife Shaheed Bibi Banazir. He promised a donation of $ 1million to the shrine. Months passed the keepers of the shrine sent reminders after reminders. Zardari sent this money on behalf of Government and People of Pakistan through the Pakistan H.C to Ajmer. Can Zardari squander poor Pakistanis money like that to fulfill MANNAT of BB. Zardari should be thankful to BB whose so called WILL helped him to become Accidental President. He should have paid this money from his own pocket. The Auditor General should recover this amount.

Instead of giving such a huge amount to a shrine, it would have been thousand times better, if he had donated it to toward education of millions of children in Pakistan who have no school to go to. The crux of the matter is that no landlord wants to educate people to prosper. Prosperity has never been a goal!
Besides, what is the point in giving this huge amount to a shrine in a different country, and not to his own. Of course we have a lot of shrines in Pakistan who need money.

Quran says " and spend in Our path, out of Our provided subsistence" Sura Baqra Ayat #3.

I see so many negative comments against Zardari I wonder if we can ever think objectively.
Zardari is a smart man or else he would not be where is today. Remember we are a nation of 193 million. He is one out of millions. He is also a Elected President. He is also the husband of Shaheed Rani Benazir Bhutto.
The Sufi Saint of India is Naib e Rasool (transalation the representative of the Prophet). A million dollar is a very humble Nazarana. Sure the Saint would have refused such gesture. But it is not for the Saint. It is for the maintainence of the Shrine. It is a place that meets the spiritual needs of Hindus and Muslims alike.
Hightime that Pakistan fulfil its obligation in recognition of our common ethical and moral and cultural foundation of the great Indian subcontinent. By this one single move Zardari has tried to move Pakistan out of the Saudi based Wahabi Islam to a more gentle and tolerant Islam envisaged by the Sufi's of this great land.

Ali Abbas, let's not compare US with Pakistan. I am sure they do not have 12 plus hours of power outages and thousands of jobless people. There is no need to giving such a big amount to Ajmer Sharif. Those people are not even the true decedents and always asking for money, even from tourists. The Indian Government gives them enough funding to keep their work running. There isn't hypocrisy about getting aid as we as citizens are ready not to take any aid and work on our own. It is the government that gets the aid and then misuses it! US is spending billions of dollars on so called war against terrorism which is causing unemployment in their country, not due to the aid given by us! Get your facts right!

Zardari is trying to make person gains out of charity money. Where did this money come from? Is it from his personal account or public accounts. Pakistan's poor have the first right on this charity. Why couldn't he donate it to a Pakistani instution like EDHI, or many others? Charity starts at home. India is rich enough to support Ajmer Sharif, plus they make millions from tourism in that area due to the Shrine already.
This charity makes no sense, unless Zardari is thinking about moving to India soon.

Absolutely. Aamir is correct. If Anon is insisting that the up keep of graves is bidat then it is probably best that he not visit them and I ask that he/she refrain from forcing the rest of us from following his/her brand of religion.

While our own people are at the brink of annihilation from hunger, disease and depression , this man (I hate to call him our President) is going around showering "tax payers" money in foreign country on mazars!
Sadly, you cannot shame a shameless!

A friend told me that when Zardari was lingering in Central jail, Karachi and each time he had a hearing in the court, he would order 15 black goats to be slaughtered on the exit gate of Central jail. The police had to stop the pickup in which he was escorted to wait for the sadqa. This is a fact!
He is running the Presidency in the same manner. Wonder how many black goats are purchased on tax payers money for Presidency on a monthly basis?

I read most of the comments by the readers. They are all saying the same thing: Unwise contribution, and the money could be used for a better ourpose within Pakistan. No one has said any thing about Zardari's motive behind this so-to-speak charity. I want to say some thing about it.
Zardari is a very clever politician. One can easily say, "He is a crook to the bare bones." There must be something personal to gain from anything he does. I have my own thoughts, but I will leave it to you all to ponder.

Zardari is a superstitious soul. He slaughters a black sheep everyday. This was expected from him. Also i do not blame Zardari, it is us as a nation who deserve leaders like him. Solved

This is yet another illegal act on the part of our rulers. In a lawless country, this is what happens. The population at large lacks guts to fight it, and can't even be inspired by the Arab spring which has thrown out 3 leaders and others are on their way. But then Pakistanis are not Arabs, with a proud history and a nation proud of its language and culture.

Kwajalein christee grant him a few more years of misrule or survival from the noose proved by the Supreme Court. Chawla

Good gesture on part of Mr. President.
Has income authorities in Pakistan checked the sources of funds? Was this reported in President's income tax returns filed? Was tax paid on this amount? If they have not, why not?

"...on behalf of the president, the government and THE PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN".
yes, every single Pakistani who voted for PPP, did have a part to play in this donation. and sadly, it was the majority!!
here's some information for anyone planing to vote for PPP next time: 1 mln USD can feed 8000 Pakistanis for 1 whole year.
