KARACHI, July 15: Lasers emerged the all round winners of the Women’s Cricket Triangular T20 Tournament at the Southend Club here on Sunday.

The final of the tournament, held to spot the best talent in women’s cricket, played between Lasers and Knights saw the former beating the latter by eight wickets.

Winning the toss, Knights elected to bat first.

They made 85 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.

Naheeda Bibi top scored with 28 while Skipper Sana Mir made 18 and Javeria Wadood 15.

Meanwhile, Bismah Maroof picked up three wickets for 13 runs and Sadia Yousuf two for 10 for Lasers.

In reply, Lasers reached their target in 15.1 overs when they were 86 for the loss of two wickets.

Skipper Bismah was 37 not out and Mariam Hasan Shah was 23 not out.

Bismah was declared both the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament as she also received the winners’ trophy from Sindh Minister for Sports Dr Mohammad Ali Shah.

Later, selector Farrukh Zaman told Dawn that he was only impressed by a few newcomers and was looking at a team of mostly senior girls for the ICC Women’s World T20 tournament, which will be played in September/October.

He had watched the tournament very closely to be able to pick the best players in consultation with women team coach Mohtashim Rasheed.

“With the World T20 only a little over two months away, it makes sense to move ahead with the senior girls, who have already been facing international teams. Still we may include a few newcomers in the standbys,” Farrukh said.

Asked who those girls could be, he said that he had noticed some improvement in newcomer Javeria Rauf.

“She is mainly a fast bowler but this time we saw her emerge as a good batswoman as well,” he added. “So in her we have a good all-rounder now,” he maintained.

Meanwhile, coach Mohtashim Rasheed said that it was a great competition and he was looking forward to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Women Wing announcing the team soon after approving their recommendations.

“We will start camp soon after that and I am hoping to see the team do very well in the World T20,” he told Dawn.

“Normally, it has been seen that the girls in other big teams such as England, New Zealand and Australia can’t handle spin very well and we in our probables have some excellent spinners in Sana Mir, Nida Dar and Sadia Yousuf. They, along with Bismah Maroof, are very good batters too.

“So in the last few years, Pakistan has groomed some great talent in women’s cricket, which is gelling quite well together,” he concluded.

The month-long camp for the next important assignments for the girls in green, including the tri-nation series in Ireland, with Bangladesh as the third team, in August and the tour of England where the national team will be playing four T20 matches before taking part in the ICC Women’s World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka in September/October will also be held at the Southend Club in Karachi.
