KARACHI: Pakistan on Wednesday named Kamran Akmal in their provisional 30-man squad for this year's World Twenty20, after the wicketkeeper-batsman was cleared of suspicions of spot-fixing.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) integrity committee last week questioned Kamran before approving him for the squad for the tournament in Sri Lanka in September and October.

“Kamran has been selected after he was cleared by the committee and we feel that he can still deliver as keeper and an opener in the Twenty20 cricket,” chief selector Iqbal Qasim told AFP.

The 30-year-old has not been selected for Pakistan since the 2011 World Cup.

His name was mentioned at the trial in England last year of three Pakistani Test players over spot-fixing allegations but he was neither summoned by the London court nor banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Former Test captain Salman Butt and pacemen Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were banned and jailed for contriving deliberate no-balls during the Lord's Test against England in 2010.

Kamran was also accused of deliberately under-performing during Pakistan's surprise defeat against Australia in the 2010 Sydney Test, where he failed to run out Shane Watson and dropped three chances from Michael Hussey.

The ICC directed the PCB to form an integrity committee to check players' conduct and their assets in the wake of the 2010 spot-fixing scandal.

Pakistan appointed Mohammad Hafeez as their Twenty20 captain in May to replace the ageing Misbah-ul Haq.

Misbah, who lost his Twenty20 place, is still missing from the preliminary squad despite vowing to get back in the shortest form.

Also recalled in the preliminary squad are all-rounder Abdul Razzaq and opener Imran Nazir. A final squad of 15 will be announced by mid-August.

Preliminary squad: Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shahzad, Khalid Latif, Nasir Jamshed, Imran Nazir, Shahzaib Hasan, Awais Zia, Sharjeel Khan, Umar Akmal, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik, Rameez Raja, Shahid Afridi, Hammad Azam, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Arafat, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Aizaz Cheema, Anwar Ali, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Raza Hasan, Sarfraz Ahmed, Kamran Akmal, Shakeel Ansar.

Don't criticize if they fail again.I am not sure what was the logic of carrying on repeatedly failed Sami and out of form Umar Gul on crucial tour to Sri Lanks. He needs rest badly to recover into form.Without Misbah I cannot think of stability in Pakistan batting in any format of game.

Preliminary sqad looks good! No need of Shoaib Malik though. Kamran Akmal should clean up his act. BCCP should monitor him very closely. All of his dropped catches and missed run-outs are still fresh in our memory. Few of the catches he dropped were so simple that 12 year old kids playing in the alley will comfortable grab them. that raises the doubt that he is a cheat. Having said that he (if not acting up) is still the best keeper cum batsman we have. Razzaq and Imran Nazir should be the permanent fixtures in limited over cricket. Great new of Umar Akmal's couseling, he and rest of the youngsters need few sessions.

Imran Nazir should be included in T/20 team! For Kamran Akmal I have some reservations against him!

It's unclear to me why Abdul Razzaq is not included in T20 squad of Pakistan. He is an assett. Happy to see his name here. Is Anwar Ali the same guy who destoyed Indian in U19 WC final a couple of years ago single handed?

Kamran is good choice ONLY if he is selected as a batsman. Asking him to keep would be a sin. But then again this is Pakistan Cricket we are talking about.. Anything goes.. We don't have a regular keeper or a half decesnt keeper in any format. T-20 is the format where we use parttimers.. so sure Kamran will be a choice.

The lot is talented , I hope they pick the best 11 ...Sort of disappointed that they did not give sami , and nawaz a chance , since they both performed very well in the U-19s and won pakistan the championship (with India)

Primary consideration is accorded to the players on the basis of their performance (past and present), their contribution in gelling the team, team spirit, technique and understanding of the game. Keeping this in view, can someone please rationalise even the provisional selection of the following? Imran Nazir, Akmal Brothers, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Sami, Yasar Arafat and Aizaz Cheema, please.

I dont know what Iqbal Qasim is talking about? I think our selectors and people have weak memories, had they forgotten the horror wicketkeeping of Mr Slippery Akmal in the world cup and it was not just the world cup, he had been keeping wickets poorly since last few years but just on the basis of his highly inconsistent batting and probably more due to his strong lobby inside and outside dressing room he was never dropped. Have they given a fair chance to sarfaraz ahmed?????? he saved them from humiliation against bangladesh in asia cup, his keeping skills are far superior than akmal and with passage of time and confidence his batting will come good too. Plssssss dont torture us with akmal anymore
