THIS is with reference to Khurram Hussain’s article ‘Power and politics’ (June 28). The writer has rightly pointed out that the power sector is rotting and has been politicised to the core.

From appointing a peon to a grade-17 officer, there is no observance of merit and the same was pointed out in Dawn also some months ago when 60 assistant managers were hired dubiously.

At the top level, no one knows who is pulling the strings. Although Pepco is defunct now, the Discos are still not completely independent and its board of director is a mere spectator to the arbitrary decisions of the ministry/ex managing director, Pepco.

Hiring, posting and transfer should be the sole right of the Discos/NTDC/ Gencos because this way their politicisation will be minimised and we can move towards merit-based institutions aimed at serving the people.
