Texila was the main centre of the Gandhara civilization. The civilization can be dated back to the 1st centaury BC. When the Buddha passed away, His relics were distributed to seven kings who built stupas over them for veneration. The object of veneration was the stupa itself. Later, this symbol was replaced by a more sensitive human image. The Gandhara schools are probably credited with the first representation of the Buddha in human form, the portrayal of Buddha in his human shape. Buddhism left a rich and enormous legacy of art and architecture in Pakistan. Despite centuries of ideological changes and violence, the region preserved a lot of the heritage in craft and art. Much of this legacy is visible even today in Pakistan.
