KARACHI, June 30: A policeman associated with the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Sindh police was gunned down in the SITE area on Saturday, officials said.

They said that Sub-Inspector Muhammad Ghufran, 42, was targeted in the SITE area a few minutes after he left his home to visit a general store.

The police said that three men on a motorbike fired at him near Haqqani Masjid in Pathan Colony No 2.

“The victim was the official in charge of the squad of the CID deputy inspector-general,” said an official at the SITE-A police station.

“He was not a member of the CID’s operational team that usually raids and arrests suspects. But one can never rule out that he was targeted because of his professional contribution.”

In June alone, three personnel of the CID police were gunned in the city, he said, adding that the fresh incident might be part of such killings.

PPP activist shot dead

A 41-year-old activist of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party was shot dead outside an eatery in North Nazimabad in the early hours of Saturday.

Police said that two men on a motorbike materialised in North Nazimabad’s Block M and one of them, after getting off the two-wheeler, targeted the PPP worker.

“The eatery has tables for patrons on a service lane and the attacker walked to that place and fired shots at Abdullah Baloch before running away with his aide,” said Inspector Sajid Javed, the SHO of the Taimuria police station.

“The victim sustained three bullet wounds and died on the spot. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.”

He said that the victim, a resident of Block N, was associated with the construction business and owned several residential and commercial buildings in North Nazimabad.

Inspector Javed said he was not sure about the motive for the killing, though the PPP saw Mr Baloch’s political association as the reason for his murder.

“Several workers of ours have been targeted in recent weeks. Miscreants are targeting PPP workers just to provoke the ruling party and exploit the vulnerable situation,” said Karachi president of the People’s Students Federation Faisal Sheikh, adding that Mr Baloch was also a former PSF activist.
