THIS is apropos of news items ‘Loadshedding is no more different in Islamabad’ (June 17) and ‘Violent power protests rock Punjab cities’ (June 18).

The politics of intrigues must end. Every issue on the earth is being talked about but nothing is done to resolve the problems being faced by people at large. Just promises and hollow statements. The government should realise that it would be judged by what it has done for the voters.

Signing agreements with other governments is not enough. The results should show. Political parties, both in power and in opposition, should do something for voters, instead of ruling through confrontation and creating issues. Pakistan has enough power generating capacity to look after the country’s need for some time.

There was a time when Pakistan was going to export its surplus electricity to India. The reason given for loadshedding now are: no water in rivers, expensive furnace oil, shortage of gas, etc.

On our part, traders should shut down business at sunset. The government should let them remain open on Saturdays till late night. Saturday is a holiday. Marriage functions should be planned for afternoon or late afternoon. Minimum of bulbs should be lighted in offices and homes during the day and only one bulb should be lit outside the house (driveway). On its part the government should stop supplying electricity to offices: civil, military and others, till they pay their outstanding dues or at least start paying the monthly bill. Let us sleep in peace at night

The people who matter and are getting an uninterrupted supply of electricity should spend one afternoon and night without electricity to feel the torture the voters are going through.

There is no solution to a problem unless one wants to do something about it. Giving statements does not solve problems.

Discrediting anyone or a party which does not tow your policies or is not of your party, is not a good way to run a government.

Live and let live.

Rule by law

‘The rule of law’ is being weaponised, taking on whatever meaning that fits the political objectives of those invoking it.
