It is quite baffling that those who run TV channels do not keep a check on the kind of programmes that are being aired on their networks. Agreed, they have to go by their fixed point charts and fill their channel’s tummy on a regular basis, but can there be a quality control system in place?

In the first week of this month, a morning show hosted by a known film and TV actor and a young girl, during its live transmission ran something for God knows how many minutes in the name of poking fun at a news anchor. There was total chaos on the set as the co-host, the girl who usually stays in her senses, went berserk with her tactless impersonation of the news person, aided, nay aggravated, by someone playing the role of a Pashtun and another young boy enacting the part of an effeminate man.

The host of the show, in between, threw crass sentences at her like “you are the kind of person that if you don’t lock the door while you are in the bathroom, people would still recognise you” without realising what he was saying. This went on for many a minute without fail, and all of them thought they were doing a remarkable job. Any sane person watching the episode must’ve been absolutely boggled by the morning show antics. If this is what our TV has come down to, then Lord help us.

‘The rule of law’ is being weaponised, taking on whatever meaning that fits the political objectives of those invoking it.
