ISLAMABAD, June 4: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay arrived here on Monday to begin a four-day visit to Pakistan.

This is her first visit to the country after becoming the high commissioner in 2008. She is visiting the country on the invitation of the government.

During the four-day stay in the country, Ms Pillay will meet Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and other senior government officials.

According to the high commissioner’s office, Ms Pillay will also hold discussions with the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, members of parliament, members of the legal profession and other organisations.

Last week, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaul, completed her 11-day visit to Pakistan.

At the end of the visit, she urged the government to address several remaining challenges to ensure the independence of the country’s judicial system.
