A Pakistan-based scientist has been honoured by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), the body said in a statement released this week.

Dr Yusuf Zafar, who is the director general agriculture and biotechnology at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission was declared ‘Scientist of the Year-2012’ for his pioneering work in the cotton biotechnology sector.

Zafar has over 110 scientific papers (published in national and international journals) to his name. According to ICAC, “in cotton virology his group covers nearly 90 per cent of the global published literature.”

The Faisalabad-based scientist played a key role in bringing together the world’s major cotton groups, including Australia, China, UK and USA, for the purpose of conducting joint research.

Heading the National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering in Faisalabad, Zafar and his team have contributed helped produce nearly 100 M. Phil and 30 Ph. D Pakistan-based students, focussing on various aspects of research and development in cotton. He has, meanwhile, remained in the front line to establish Biosafety Protocols, Plant Breeder Rights, Intellectual Property Rights/Patents and ISO certification in Pakistan.

In 2001, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission awarded him Best Scientist of the Year Award. The President of Pakistan awarded him ‘Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Distinction) in 2004, the highest recognition for a researcher.

In other honours, Zafar has also won the Rockefeller Foundation and UNESCO Research Awards on Agri-Biotechnology, and is member of the USDA Cochran Fellow on Agriculture Biotechnology.

Apart from leading the Faisalabad institute, he is on the Board of Governors of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology-ICGEB (Italy), FAO country focal person on agriculture biotechnology and member of the Cotton Policy Committee of the government.

The ‘Scientist of the year -2012’ award was announced by ICAC late Wednesday. ICAC is an intergovernmental body with 54 members and provides services to Common Funds for Commodity (CFC), an organisation of UNCTAD-UN family.

Applications for the award are invited each year by the Washington DC-based institute and the selection committee comprises five anonymous judges outside the ICAC Secretariat.

The reason that he covers 90% litertaure in cotton virology is that all problem with cotton are in Pakistan rather than other countries. This include cotton productivity and diseases.

Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) was established in late 1950s and visionary leadership included food security and social/health needs of the nation in addition to nuclear power and strategic security..PAEC is operating 04 Agriculture & Biotechnology centers, 14 world class cancer medical centers ( 4 more are under construction), a HEC first ranking engineering university (PIEAS) and many more centers.Presently PAEC is the largest and more viable research organisation of Pakistan. it is pride of our nation

Thanks for the correction. Can someone from Dawn confirm this? We should be told the truth. Years ago some tried to portray another Pakistani for the Nobel prize given for environment conservation and that turned out to be a bogus claim. The fact that the award was shared by over 100 scientists was not elaborated.

Mashaallah! May we have many more Dr. Zafars that can become the pride of Pakistan.

So fellows, hang on, hope is there.... so just hang on and work hard. We are more than what the world has been FED about us. Oh and those who missed this, "Dr Yusuf Zafar, who is the director general agriculture and biotechnology at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission".... AGAIN .... "the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission"... Yeah, indeed, the Atomic bomb as well.... So next time someone talk about this comission in just terms of bombs; do think about this article... This organisation is not just about bombs. It is serving the nation and the humanity on many fronts. For example, the one that is mentioned in this article. Be proud to be Pakistani, even if you know that world wont agree, YET! Naveed.

That's Great! But cannot we 'popularise' and publicise these things...I mean when he's been awarded, only then we're coming to know... Obviously it's partly my fault of being so aloof to such developments... but partly it seems media's fault... Why can't such people become a part of the mainstream... the leaders of knowledge... inspiration to the nation...? No Offence. This is a Serious question... what are the determinants of making such people known...? of backing them...? of making them a true inspiration?

But Polio is also our problem but no one did any research even how to tackle social resistance to vaccination campaigns leave alone any microbiolgical or immunological research. All such work has been done in West. If the problem is here we should be the leader and if he lead he did the right thing. It is our major crop, a source of foreign exchange.

Success for pulse polio needs coordination from the people. Supply Chain, volunteers who can penetrate each and every corner of the country thats what is happend in india. If you see on the pulse polio day , hospitals, bus stops, railway stations, schools, every where health workers will do the things properly from village to town. The biggest challenge here how to coordinate with such a big event, can any one dare to go to the places in the balooch? or some of the provinces? with out armed guards??? the big question for the sustainability of pakistan is the day a person from one of end of the country and another end then only you can ever imagine of talking a growth otherwise its impossible. This is the biggest cause of your failure in pulse polio

A true national hero. Drs. Zafar and Qadeer Khan are role models that Pakistani kids should look up to and try to emulate. Talk show hosts should bring Dr. Zafar to the forefront so that Pakistani kids and adults recognize the value of a good education combined with intellegence and hard work.

I am an Indian(Hindu) and I am very Proud that a Pakistani Scientist has made such an achievement. Many other Pakistanis can achieve such things provided they get good education and opportunities thereafter to prove their talent.I request all my Pakistani brothers to start loving Indian People and all my Indian Brothers to love Pakistani People. This way people of both the nations will prosper. Let politicians be not allowed to stop us from doing so,otherwise we will continue to suffer .We can't waste any more time in nurturing hate each other. We have to start loving each other and respect each other. Once we forget our enemity, entire world will be at our feet. Please think about it seriously

Hold your horses yo all in Pakistan and expatriates. You cant be proud because of one smart pants. Pakistan is seen as a terrorist country, everyday bombs are detonated to kill innocent Pakistanis, soldiers; power outages/load shedding, potable water rationing etc. We Pakistanis must collectively take inventory of ourselves and the quality of of life for everyday folks.
May 5, 2012 6:15 am
stand tall even if Pakistan is a poor country. Pakistan is rich in natural resources but lack in loyal Pakistanis who can contribute to the welfare & prestige of Pakistan.
May 5, 2012 6:16 am
Undoubtedly, congrats to Dr Zafar for his achievement but to what good for country. Pakistan needs pakistanis and not $ from the West to run the country. Late ZAB once said, we'll eat grass but we'll respond to India's nuclear tests. He gave Pakistan a nb but nation has never lived to respect the country. It hurts to talk about it. Never mind Pakistan Zindabad-o-Pa'indabad.
May 5, 2012 6:20 am
Congratulations Dr. Zaffar. Polio is another problm I understand but it is not only the social resistance to blame the failure to eradicate it. There are many other issues needs to be sorted out in our society. Social resistance is one of the core issues to acheive its 99.99% immunization. Vijay

May 5, 2012 7:39 am
Dr. Zafar deserves the highest commendation from ordinary people like me. There are many hundred millions of us. All this proves that in every arena of our national life that we are quite capable of producing individual sparks of brightness. We have produced Khans in squash, Fazal , Javed , Miandad in cricket, we had Dr. Salam (although some still refuse to own him as ours), we had Iqbal, Jinnah, Arefa Karim, Nawazish (of 23 A level fame) etc, etc. We cannot, however, integrate our achievements through a coherent national vision. Our plans are invariably sabotaged by one vested group or the other. To gain power we do not shy of breaking our country, trampling the constitution, disobeying the law or refusing to recognise punishment. We CANNOT WORK TOGETHER for a common objective. Everyone wants to be a leader. I am sure with time we learn this as well. Till then .....

Typical pessimist mentality. You people cannot do any thing for the country and in many cases prefer to flee abroad for greener pastures. When somebody who stayed back works hard and makes a name for himself and the country you start criticizing him/her. Go back to your cave and stop whining

Many Congrats Dr Zafar The news confirms the fact : You can excel in any field and make a name for your self and make your country proud , without moving abroad. Just read and try to understand the value of this statement "" “…..in cotton virology his group covers nearly 90 per cent of the global published literature.” Well done, Pakistanis . Keep it up

We are happy for Dr Zafar and proud of his contribution. But please state facts correctly. A Pakistani has been commended for research alongside another researcher. There is no "best scientist award". The researcher of the year was an Indian man and next year someone else will be awarded to encourage research work.

overwhelming response from all over the world provided new hope for the younger generation. We should make promise with ourselves to perform our work with all honesty, dedication and keeping the merit our sole criteria. This is the first step in right direction irrespective of what is happening around us. No nation could survive with injustice for a longer period of time. We have to return to meritocracy. Progress and prosperity will flow automatically. I thank you all for your nice and warm comments. Thank you DAWN for providing space to unsung heros and silent intellect minority who are concerned for humanity as well as for Pakistan..

It is always nice to hear about a scientist, be it from any country. Pakistan is a great country with loads of opportunities and talent. It just needs to shake off its religious background.
