A case of blasphemy

Published November 13, 2010

THE decision taken by the court to sentence a 45-year-old Christian woman, Asia Bibi, to death for blasphemy is unfortunate. Isn't it time to change our mindset and start thinking a bit more rationally? These discriminatory laws are in contrast with our Constitution and the speeches/practices made by the Father of the Nation.

These laws seem to only protect the elite.

If such cases are investigated with honest impartiality, you will find many examples of how these laws are exploited to humiliate people.

I suspect that there would be someone behind the scenes -- someone who wanted to punish the poor lady for something that she apparently didn't do.

This is a case of discrimination. Was she tried fairly, is there any recorded evidence against her? The sanctity of human life is clearly demonstrated in the biography of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

He respected human life and human body (after death). All religious clerics know these facts. By committing such crimes, do we really think we are following Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as our role model?

Do we find any evidence of such laws in the life of the Prophet (PBUH)? Why can't we be human? Why can't we learn to coexist?
