KARACHI: Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Syed Kaleem Imam on Thursday ordered an inquiry against a police inspector for submitting a ‘fake’ report before the advocate general (AG) of Sindh against the DIG of Sukkur, containing grave allegations against the senior officer of the Sukkur region, according to a police spokesperson.

According to a statement issued by Central Police Office, the provincial police chief has expressed his extreme displeasure over submission of a report by Inspector Ghulam Ali Jumani, presently posted at Police Training Centre, Larkana, against the DIG of Sukkur.

Mr Jumani has submitted his report containing allegations against the senior officer of Sukkur region pertaining to smuggling of Iranian oil into the region.

“This (report) was fake and without any basis,” said the police spokesperson in a statement. The inspector had “himself” initiated an inquiry as he was not asked by anyone. The police spokesperson wondered how a junior officer could hold an inquiry against the senior officer.

Expressing his extreme displeasure over it, the IG of Sindh has sought an explanation from the inspector and ordered the police authorities to initiate departmental and legal proceedings against him (Jumani).

The statement also said that senior officers had not asked the said inspector to conduct an inquiry against the DIG of Sukkur, nor was he entitled to do so.

According to a purported report prepared by Inspector Jumani being shared on social media, Iranian oil was being smuggled in more than 100 tankers from Jhatpat area of Balochistan to Sindh, which was being brought to Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore and Sukkur and subsequently being supplied to different fuel stations. It alleged that certain police officers were involved in it.

Three senior police officers, who wished not to be named, told Dawn that “some vested interests” had managed this report through Inspector Jumani. Therefore, the police authorities have asked Jumani as to who tasked him for preparing this report.

A senior official said that there were also serious allegations against Jumani. In one such report against him prepared by the SSP of Jacobabad and submitted before the IGP office, it has been stated that Inspector Jumani in a capacity as in-charge of complaint and grievance redressal office at Sukkur range was allegedly involved for approaching the officers of Sukkur police for “undue favours”.

The report urged the higher authorities to initiate “suitable” departmental action against him (Jumani) “to discourage such acts of malfeasance and unprofessionalism in future.”
