CHITRAL: A teenage girl committed suicide by jumping into the Chitral River while a young boy was rescued after he attempted to end his life on Wednesday.

A police official told Dawn that the incident occurred in Tech village of Torkhow where an unmarried girl (18) ended her life by jumping into the river whose body was recovered later.

The reason for the suicide was said to be domestic bickering but the police were carrying out an inquiry to ascertain the real cause.

In the second incident, a teenage boy of Karimabad valley reportedly jumped into the river from a cable car near Shahi Qila.

The eyewitnesses said the onlookers strived hard and succeeded to rescue him alive and rushed him to the district headquarters hospital where he was recovering.

The boy is working as barber in the city.

Meanwhile, the prolonged wait of the people of upper Chitral for a separate district came to an end on Wednesday when a deputy commissioner was posted there.

The competent authority has named Shah Fahad, a PAS officer of grade 18, as the deputy commissioner of Upper Chitral district.

The bifurcation of Chitral district was announced by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman and Prime Minister Imran Khan in November 2017.

Upper Chitral had been a separate district till July 1969 when Chitral State was merged into the then NWFP.
