Shiraz, Fahad share limelight

KARACHI: Shiraz Hussain and Fahad Iqbal played pivotal roles as their respective sides moved into the semi-finals of the KCCA Zone-VI ‘A’ Division League Cricket Tournament here the other day.

Slow left-armer Shiraz starred six wickets for 13 runs to help Alamgir Gymkhana beat Hyderi Sports by eight wickets at the TMC Ground.

Fahad stroked 136, which included 16 fours, while guiding Northern Gymkhana to an imposing 292-8 in the allotted 40 overs against Paposh Nagar CC who suffered a 155-run drubbing at the RLCA Ground.

Nabeel shines with all-round show

KARACHI: Nabeel Khalid produced a fine all-round performance to help Al-Imran CC ease to a comfortable 70-run victory over Liaquatabad Eaglets in their Zone-I third-stage tie of the PCB Fazal Mahmood National Club Championship here on Wednesday.

Batting first at the UBL Sports Complex Ground, Al-Imran CC made 237-7 in 45 overs. Nabi Zaman was the top scorer with 60 off 67 balls (four boundaries), Daniyal Mansoor hit 42 while Nabeel blasted a 23-ball 37 (three sixes and two four).

Liaquatabad Eaglets were dismissed for 165 in 38.2 overs. Sajid Habib scored 54 in 79 balls (six boundaries).

Skipper Imran Ali claimed 3-16 in nine overs of left-arm spin and Nabeel took 3-49 but he was guilty of sending down as many as 17 wides with his medium-pacers.

Veteran cricket organiser passes away

HYDERABAD: Former president of the District Cricket Association (DCA) and veteran cricket organiser Karamat Ali Abbasi died on Wednesday after protracted illness. He was 74.

He was laid to rest in Lalu Lashari graveyard.

Hyderabad Mayor Syed Tayyab Hussain, Prof Siddique Kalhoro, pro-vice chancellor Sindh University Badin campus, ex-PCB governing board member Mir Haider Talpur, Regional Cricket Association (RCA) president Mir Suleman Talpur, DCA Hyderabad president Shakeel Qureshi, former Sindh Assembly members Aminuddin, Rehman Rajput, director Sindh University, and Akram Ansari among others attended the funeral.

Karamat was a man who devoted around 50 years of his life in promoting cricket. Almost 40 years ago, he founded Liaquat Colony Sports Club which remains active, and is now headed by his son. He remained president DCA Hyderabad from 2010 to 2013 and was vice-president of now defunct Hyderabad Divisional Cricket Association (HDCA).—Mohammad Hussain Khan

FG breeze into polo final

LAHORE: FG team outclassed PBG/Remounts 9 1/2-4 to reach the Lt Gen Shah Rafi Alam Polo Cup final here at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Thursday.

While Eulogio Celestino fired in five goals to steer his team to a facile victory, Shah Shamyl Alam earned a hat-trick and Abbas Mukhtar chipped in with a goal.

From the losing side, Nicholas Maria Ruiz slammed a hat-trick and Lt Col Rab Nawaz Tiwana contributed one.

In another match of the day, Artema Medical defeated AOS Polo team 8-6 1/2 to qualify for the subsidiary final.

Nicholas Pepper smashed four goals for the winners while Daniyal Sheikh and Hamza Mawaz Khan scored a brace each. Hashim Kamal Agha scored four goals, and Hamza Ali and Goffredo Cutinelli contributed one goal apiece for AOS.—Sports Reporter

Parbat in final, Amin, Mahatir win titles

KARACHI: Parbat Kumer overpowered M. Ali 6-4,6-3 in the men’s singles semifinal to enter the final of the NBP National Senior and Junior Tennis Championship being played at the DA Creek Club here on Thursday.

In the under-16 final, Amin Shafi beat Taha Aman to win the title while in under-12 final, Mahatir Mohammad overcame Nadir Mirza to win 4-1 2-5 5-3.

Inter-club golf begins today

LAHORE: Golf teams from Lahore’s leading clubs, Defence Raya, Lahore Gymkhana and Royal Palm, will fight it out for the Inter-club Team Trophy starting from Friday.

With each team comprising 32 players, the first round will be played at the Defence Raya course, the second round at the Gymkhana course on Saturday and the final round at the Royal Palm course.—Sports Reporter
