LAHORE: The caretaker provincial government has amended its earlier notification regarding termination of former Punjab advocate general Asma Hamid and accepted her resignation instead.

A notification issued by the acting law secretary says in partial modification of earlier notification “the Punjab governor pursuant to clause 4 of Article 140 of the Constitution is pleased to accept the resignation of Ms Asma Hamid, tendered on July 10, 2018, from the office of Punjab advocate general with effect from June 20, 2018.”

Lawyers believe that the withdrawal of the earlier notification by the caretaker government was a result of a litigation initiated by Lahore High Court Bar Association Secretary Hassan Warraich against the removal of Ms Hamid as AGP.

The court had directed the caretaker government to resolve the matter with an amicable solution.

Mr Warraich said Ms Hamid facilitated the matter with her stance that she did not wish to serve as the principal law officer to a caretaker set-up that had seen it fit to remove her without notice.

He said Ms Hamid, therefore, chosen to resign in the event the earlier illegal notification was withdrawn.

Previously, the high court had also ordered reinstatement of 10 assistant advocate generals removed by the caretaker government.
