Hunting in parks

Published December 11, 2017

THIS refers to the letter ‘Islamabad park’ (Nov 30) in which the writer has mentioned a hunter with a gun in F-9’s Jinnah Park in Islamabad.

Under SRO 442(I)/80 published in the official gazette of April 28, 1980, “all open spaces, developed or underdeveloped within the municipal limits of Islamabad, excluding the area declared to be the national park under the said ordnance are wildlife sanctuaries.”

A wildlife sanctuary under section 20 of the Islamabad Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management) Ordnance 1979 is an area where “no person shall hunt kill or capture any wild animal or fire any gun or other firearm within one and a half kilometer of its boundaries.”

Therefore, it is illegal for any hunter to enter or use a firearm in the F-9 Jinnah Park. The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board is in contact with the management of the F-9 park, which will ensure that there is no violation in future and appropriate action is taken against any hunter caught using a gun or any firearm in the park.
