Ahmed crowned golf champion

LAHORE: Promising Ahmed Baig won the 35th Punjab Amateur Golf Championship title at Lahore Gymkhana here on Sunday.

During the final 18 holes, Ahmed of the Garrison Golf and Country Club managed to hit accurately off the tees and excelled in shot-making from the fairways, giving him a final round score of gross 74 and an aggregate of 214 two under par.

Taimoor Khan of PAF and Multan’s Ashiq Hussain grabbed second and third positions, respectively.

As for the net competition in the amateur section, Danish Javed won the first position with a three-round aggregate of 212. He was followed by second-placed Hassan Samiuddin (215) and third-placed Khalid Mehmood (219).

In the women’s play, Anna James Gill won in the gross section. Rimsha Ijaz and Parkha Ijaz obtained second and third positions, respectively.

Top three spots in the net section were claimed by Suneyah Osama, Samea Javed Ali and Hamna Amjad, respectively.

Shahbaz stars in KCCA Zone-IV event

KARACHI: Inspired by a superb century from Shahbaz Malik, Al-Hadeed Gymkhana trounced Commrade Sports by 182 runs as three more matches were decided in the KCCA Zone-IV Abdul Rauf Malik Cricket Tournament at the Pak Star Ground.

Batting first, Al-Hadeed Gymkhana posted 303-7 in their allotted 40 overs largely due to a fourth-wicket partnership of 155 between Shahbaz (101) and Ayaz Khan (92) before paceman Rao Mohammad (4-23) and slow left-armer Mohammad Irfan shared seven wickets between them to bowl out Commrade Sports for 121 in 29.4 overs.

In the remaining two matches, Pak Gymkhana beat Inqilab CC by 85 runs and Quaidabad Gymkhana sealed a 59-run win against Hansot Brothers CC.

Rashid bags above-45 title at ITF Seniors

LAHORE: Rashid Malik won the above-45 category final beating Jehanzeb Khan 6-1, 6-3 in the ITF Seniors World Ranking Tennis Championships Grade-4 at Bigh-e-Jinnah courts here on Monday.

Looking in fine form, Rashid did not allow his opponent to settle at any stage to complete an easy win. Overall, it was the third title grabbed by Rashid, a former Davis Cupper and coach.

Meanwhile, the Asad Niaz and Khawaja Khurram annexed the above-60 doubles title overcoming the pair of Rao Itikhar and Rai Zahid, the former president and secretary of the Punjab Lawn Tennis Association, respectively.

After Asad and Khurram won the first set 6-3, Rao Iftikhar and Zahid fought back bagging the second set with the same score. Asad and Khurram, however, regained control to win the decisive third set 10-6 in tiebreak.

Honda Chenab clinch Winter Polo Cup

LAHORE: Eight-goal Bilal Haye guided Honda Chenab to earn a thrilling 12-10 victory against Artema Medical/Black Horse Paints to clinch the Winter Polo Cup here at the Lahore Polo Club ground on Sunday.

Besides Bilal, the other scorers for the winners were Ahmed Ali Tiwana and Ghulam Mustafa Monnoo, banging home two goals each. From the losing side, Hamza Mawaz Khan hit a double hat-trick while Abubakar Siddique and Ahmad Bilal Riaz scored one goal apiece.

Dawood Group outclassed Newage by 10-3 to win the subsidiary final. From the winning side, Raja Arslan Najeeb struck five goals, Abdullah Dawood scored three and Omar Asjad Malhi and Mumtaz Abbas Niazi hit one goal apiece. From the losing side, Alman Jalil Azam scored a brace while Shah Shamyl Alam added one.—Sports Reporter

Arsalan sets new national record

LAHORE: Arsalan Anjum of Pakistan Army set a new national record in 4000-metre race as the 63rd National Men’s and 12th Women’s Track Cycling Championship Elite/Junior started here on Monday.

Arsalan clocked 04:59:89 in 4000m individual pursuit (men’s elite). He was followed by second-placed Sabir and third-placed Izatullah, both of Wapda.

Around 100 male and female cyclists are participating in the championship.

Overall, five events were decided on the first day.

Fata Super League second edition in March

LANDI KOTAL: The second edition of Fata Super League (FSL) T20 cricket tournament will commence on March 24 next year with 24 participating teams from all the seven tribal agencies and six Frontier Regions.

Sharing details of the tournament with Dawn, chairman FSL Taimur Afridi said the teams would be divided in four pools of six teams each.

He said matches would be played at regional cricket grounds in Jamrud (Khyber Agency), Khar (Bajaur), Parachinar (Kurram Agency), North Waziristan and Peshawar.

Four Pakistan internationals would be allowed to play for each side. Afridi said team owners have been asked to submit Rs. 200,000 per team as entry fee prior to January 15.

Any team failing to deposit the fee till the last date will be placed for auction or replaced with another interested party. The winning team will receive Rs. 1 million while Rs. 500,000 will be awarded to the runners up.—Correspondent

IOC baseball coaching course ends

LAHORE: The five-day long International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Solidarity Technical Course for Baseball Coaches ended here on Sunday.

George Santiago World Baseball Softball Confederation’s coach conducted the course, allocated to Pakistan Baseball Federation by the IOC on the recommendations of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA).

Syed Fakhar Ali Shah, Syed Babar Ali Sherazi and Abdul Jabbar assisted Santiago as coordinators.Coaches from different schools, universities and departments of the country participated in the course.

Santiago said his stay in Pakistan was memorable and he enjoyed it. He said Pakistan possessed remarkable talent in baseball.
