India booked their spot in the Final of Asia Cup 2017 with a convincing 4-0 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super 4s match at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Saturday, Asian Hockey Federation reported.
Goals from Satbir Singh (39′), Harmanpreet Singh (51′), Lalit Upadhyay (52′) and Gurjant Singh (57′) ensured the top spot in Super 4s for India.
This was the second match between the two sides in the Asia Cup 2017 as they have already faced each other in the Pool stage where India came out on top with a 3-1 victory.
Pakistan started the match on the attack as they won three penalty corners inside the first quarter but could not convert any as the Indian defence was up to the task.
The second quarter saw both the teams battle it out in the midfield as they looked to establish their authority in the match.
The third quarter finally saw India penetrate Pakistan’s circle as their team-work led to a great goal in the 39th minute when forward Satbir Singh made a darting run on the right flank and passed the ball towards the Pakistan goal which made its way inside the goal as the Pakistani defence failed to intercept it.
India started the fourth quarter aggressively as Varun Kumar missed a chance to score when Gurjant Singh found him in the circle with a calculated pass in the 46th minute. India won two successive penalty corners in the 48th and 49th minute, both of which were saved by
Pakistan’s Amjad Ali with some heroic saves to deny the Indians.

Pakistan was superior in field hockey and nowadays we can't win a single game against India. Lost twice in the last one week and that too without any fight. Just like Cricket, Pakistan is becoming an average hockey team. Our ranking is 13 whereas India is 6. Need to give more importance to domestic sports.

Watched the match from beginning to the end, excellent game of hockey that was. Judging by the performance of Pakistan, I think Pakistan has a pretty long way to go, just to go back to the form of 2001-2002. Lot of introspection needs to be done, in the current form, teams like Malaysia, Canada, Ireland, South Africa and Japan can give Pakistan run for their money. Speaking of India, I think barring their lapses in defense, generation and conversion of penalty corners they are doing great and if they manage to check all the boxes they will be unbeatable by any team in the world.

instead of "India smash Pakistan," and "Arch Rival Pakistan" and other meaningless provocative language. India and Pakistan both have the same history of great hockey skills inherited before India was dismembered. Let us keep it pleasant and to the technical aspects of the sport.

India is ranked sixth in FIH ranking and Pakistan 14th. This is eighth consecutive victory of India over Pakistan. The fitness is an issue, after giving a power packed display for 30 minutes the Pak players looked tired and India finished it off easily. Fitness and total hockey are lacking in Pakistan hockey. If Pakistan hockey management is serious, a detailed planning for future has to be done otherwise hocke is in bad condition in Pakistan. Forget India this team even played a draw with Japan.

This is just a match result however India is definitely much much superior in every criteria. I have visited Mumbai and Agra for a month and just have returned home. Pakistan’s game plan in the mid field is satisfactory but they are lacking finishing touches to get the goals - probably need to make use of short passes in the circle to get the goals - the forwards keep going for the glory instead of using their team mate to score an easy goal - it’s a team game, please learn to play as a team - selfish attitude won’t get you far in team sport.
See how Australians or Dutch get into the position when the ball lands in the circle - they score from least possible option to beat the defense.

I was a hockey fan and still am, however unfortunately I believe it’s time to hang up the stick. I went to Pakistan last year and couldn’t even find a hockey stick in most of the sporting stores! Very sad!

In this sucess of Indian Men Hockey there is a lion's share of Hocky India League. Success of IPL has encouraged starting of various leagues in India. Currently there are leagues for Badminton, Kabaddi, Football, Wrestling, Hockey. These leagues have given respective sport & players much awaited & deserving fame, publicity & money. For sure India will perform much better in these sports in coming years.

Same time we have to scrutiny what benefit they get, under which condition they practice, and how the administration is helping them in becoming a great team. Bringing foreign coach to show the country that we are doing everything is camouflage. Most important is bring foreign players and teams to play in Pakistan. Things will fall in place again.

Vastly superior India crushed Pakistan. Had it not been for Amjad the goalie's heroic saves, the score would have been 9-0 or 10-0. Pakistani mid field was virtually non existent.

Like to read Dawn but would not subscribe to the word Smash , Honestly Pakistan played very well till Q3 end and lost in Q4 . Also in the entire tournament Pakistan defence was solid Well played Pakistan . Every match they improved . Pakistan needs to play more international Hockey tournaments .Pakistan has qualified for the World cup in 2018 to be held in India Wont be surprised if Pakistan does very well in World Cup . Either the coaches are drugged or the players are just picked from the street. I believe the players enter the field with defeat in their mind. They are trying to play not to loose. May be Bangladesh played bad on purpose. It’s hard to believe that Pakistani players are playing that bad.

Just watched 1984 Olympic hockey win by Pakistan. The players were a class apart... Kalimullah, Samiullah and Hassan Sardar. I doubt if players of that caliber will ever come in the near future.

It was a good game. I am from an older era where India Pakistan encounter were always look forwarded to. And it was always a tough game for India. I remember my Sanskrit teacher telling the class, we Indians send a 100 people to the Olympics and we come back empty handed ( of-course that is changing for the good now), but Pakistan sends one team and comes back with a medal. Pakistan has somewhere lost its way. The kids still show the earlier "tenacity" in flashes ( Remember the game was almost equal for the first three quarters). But the administrative support needs to be there. A lot of Astroturf grounds, and a lot of work needs to done at the grass roots level.

Hockey is no option for Pakistanis. Due to internal politics the game once considered a national game that produced many laurels for Pakistan has evaporated. In all sports today science and technology matters more than players. No qualified coaches, no proper training facilities, no incentives and lack of trust building has all rendered hockey in Pakistan a mediocre show.

I watched the whole match and found Pakistan players lacking in fitness and focus which cost them the match. Besides negative approach to the match was also one of the reasons. Instead of playing simple hockey they were trying to go extra miles and in the process forgetting the basics. I hope Pakistan improves in the near future.

One thing I would like to remind here,no Indian player player made fun of any Pakistani player at the end of the match. They shook hands with them as a gesture of sportsman spirit. We know how Pakistan team insulted the Indian players before its own people in Orissa few years back. There should be healthy competition with no grudges.

Instead of mourning we must introspect the reason and act on it. Internal politics, blaming on others, bad management has ruined sports in the country. Young generation is getting disinterested in sports and channelizing their energy for wrong reason because of political apathy. When we have no shortage of talents in the country, there is no reason why we can not get back our crowning glory. The only thing missing is will power.

Pakistan Hockey can rebound. Players in any sports should have skill, stamina and confidence to win. But Pakistani players in any form of sports lack the confidence. One cannot blame them for lack of confidence, because confidence is gained being proud of their nation. How any one, players or ordinary citizens, could be proud of Pakistan, because whether they admit or not, they know that Pakistan is doing dreadful in every sphere, due to terrorism, corruption, religious fanaticism & bigotry, etc. Most of their heart is full of hate, anger and desperation. The authorities, even the media doe not tell them truth. In earlier articles even The Dawn says Pakistan scared India, while they lost to India 1-3, again they scared Malaysia, but lost too. India beat them again 4-0, but still Pakistan scared India. One should understand the strength of his enemy, then his own weakness and there should be a clean mind to overcome obstacles. By blaming others for their own fault will not help.

@Wonder it is simply because Indian sports at present attracts huge amount of money in most of the sports stream and hence more and more professional players are emerging. Already, we have produced world Champion in Badminton, chess, Archery, Boxing, Shooting, Weight Lifting beside Cricket and Hockey.Though of late, in Hockey, we are lagging behind world Champion at present but surely, it is catching up very fast.Also in Kabaddi, we are world super power.Our players also won Olympic medal in wrestling.No doubt, Overall sports index in India is in upswing.

Don't worry guys - both India and Pakistan suck at Hockey these days - these used to be two top teams in the world where are they now - the techniques of hockey have moved from dribbling to long passes, which require fast runs which means endurance big stamina for players; our players just don't have those because the lack of integrity brings inferior players and the lack of financial sponsorship forces the players to not be able to put 100% into the game.

@Tariq Rashid India only play at international level, not bilateral level. India does not afraid of Pakistan in Cricket, beat Pakistan hands down many times.

IndiN won the final too & in badminton Indiann won the Denmark open what a nation proud of being Indian & dear pak no need to compare with India as u r having great capabilities only problem lacking u behind is extremism and faith on religion which is killing millions in the world every year.
