ISLAMABAD: In response to the cutting down of trees near Ataturk Avenue, the chairman of The National Commission on Human Rights (NCHR) Justice Ali Nawaz Chowhan has stated that the act is a violation of human rights.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been asked to maintain the status quo until the matter is addressed by the NCHR. A written reply has been sought from the CDA by Oct25 and the hearing has been fixed for Oct 30.

“The commission has taken cognizance of the complaint against the cutting of trees around Ataturk Avenue. Pakistan already has one of the lowest proportions of forest areas in the world, with only 5pc of land covered with forests. Trees are crucial to human life because they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, prevent erosion, provide building materials and serve as windbreakers,” he said. Mr Chowhan has stated that trees are vital for maintaining a healthy environment, which is why they become a part of the fundamental human right to live. Environmental issues are covered by NCHR’s mandate under section 9 of the NCHR Act of 2012.
