CHINIOT: Police claim to have arrested two alleged smugglers, recovering a cache of arms and ammunition from them.
City Deputy Superintendent of Police Hassan Iftikhar told the media on Saturday that police teams set up pickets at entry points to the city on a tip-off that some arms dealers were smuggling weapons from tribal areas to various parts of Punjab, including Chiniot.
During the picketing, Rajoa police intercepted a car and during checking recovered 16 pistols, nine rifles and 25,000 rounds of cartridges from the vehicle.
He said two occupants of the car identified as Kamran Khan and Ahmad Zareef Khan, both residents of Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtumkhwa, were arrested.
The DSP said the investigation was on to know whether the recovered weapons, being smuggled to Lahore and Faisalabad, were to be used in any terrorist activity during Muharram.
